Inspiration

Managing day-to-day finances is harder than it should be. Many people have money coming in and out through different channels, but almost no visibility into where their spending actually goes. Existing tools often feel bloated or too generic. I wanted to build something lightweight, fast, and personal — a tool that gives users a clear picture of their financial habits with minimal effort.

What it does

FinTrack lets users:

Add, edit, and categorize expenses

View organized lists of transactions

See summaries of spending patterns

Quickly understand where money is going

It focuses on clean UI and simple workflows, making expense tracking something users can actually stick to.

How we built it

Frontend: React + Vite + TypeScript for fast development, strong type safety, and responsive UI components

Backend: Node.js API using Mongoose to model and validate data

Database: MongoDB for flexible document storage

State Management: React hooks for handling UI state and form data

Design: Minimalist and functional interface to keep the experience smooth and predictable

Challenges we ran into

Structuring the database schema to keep transactions simple but flexible

Ensuring the UI updates smoothly as new expenses are added

Handling form validation and category management cleanly in TypeScript

Designing a UI that is intuitive without cluttering the user with too much information

Accomplishments that we're proud of

A clean, fast, fully functional expense-tracking system built end-to-end

A simple interface that still delivers meaningful financial insights

Smooth integration between React, TypeScript, MongoDB, and Mongoose

Creating a tool that actually solves a real day-to-day problem

What we learned

How to design and structure a full-stack project with a strong separation of concerns

Better understanding of data modeling and validation with Mongoose

Building more maintainable UI components with TypeScript

How to think from a user’s perspective when displaying financial data

What's next for FinTrack

Add charts for spending visualization

Monthly budget planning

Smart insights or recommendations based on past spending

CSV/UPI statement import

User authentication and secure cloud sync

Mobile-responsive version for easier tracking on the go
