🚀 FinTrace – A Trade Journaling App for Every Indian Trader

🌱 Inspiration

As a retail investor and trading enthusiast, we often found myself juggling spreadsheets, screenshots, and scattered notes to track my trades. While global platforms like TradeZella and StonkJournal offer robust features, they often come with steep pricing or lack localization for Indian markets. We realized there was a gap — no accessible, browser-based trade journaling app tailored for Indian traders at a nominal cost.

That’s when the idea for FinTrace was born — a simple, intuitive, and affordable trade journaling platform that empowers traders to reflect, analyze, and grow.

🛠️ How I Built It

we built FinTrace entirely using Built.New, embracing the rapid application development. As someone without a formal background in web development, this was both a challenge and a revelation. We focused on:

  • Frontend: Designed a clean, responsive UI with TypeScript and CSS.
  • Data Handling: All trading data is stored locally within your browser's localStorage for privacy and quick access.
  • Features: Includes comprehensive trade entry, detailed Profit & Loss (P&L) tracking, advanced risk/reward metrics, in-depth drawdown analysis, and performance summaries, all accessible directly within your browser.
  • Built With: Developed using Bolt.new, leveraging its capabilities for rapid application development.

📚 What I Learned

  • Low-code doesn’t mean low-effort — We learned how to structure logic, manage state, and debug like a developer
  • Design matters — We spent time refining the UI/UX to make it intuitive for first-time users
  • Data storytelling — We explored how to visualize trading performance in a way that’s both insightful and motivating -Storage — We learnt how to handle data for this use case in a way that's cost effective and beneficial for the users

⚔️ Challenges Faced

  • Learning curve: As a first-time web app builder, understanding component logic and data flow took time
  • Balancing features vs. simplicity: We had to resist the urge to overbuild and instead focus on core journaling needs
  • Browser compatibility: Ensuring the app worked seamlessly across devices and screen sizes was a constant test

🌍 Impact

FinTrace is more than just a project — it’s a step toward democratizing trade journaling in India. By making it browser-based and cost-effective, We hope to help traders of all levels reflect on their decisions, learn from their patterns, and ultimately trade smarter.
