Inspiration
Historically, finance education and the stock market have been completely male dominated. This has caused for the lack of support and resources for women to start or continue their investment in stocks. Alongside this, is the lack of confidence many women face in not knowing what exactly to invest and how to do it safely. That's why we created Finterest: a way to invest in your interests and make better financial decisions!
What it does
You'll start by selecting categories that interests you, such as clothes and how much you want to invest per stock. Based on your interests, we generate personalized stock recommendations that you can choose like or dislike. The liked stocks that fit your preferences will be saved and the stocks that don't fit you will be discarded. Additionally, we display a risk investment percentage for each company and a chatbot to help with any general financial questions.
How we built it
To create Finterest we utilized React Native to build the frontend. For backend we utilized Node.js as our runtime environment and Express to handle the HTTP requests and API. Lastly, for our database we're using MongoDB to store information.
Challenges we ran into
Frontend Challenges: A frontend challenge we faced was deciding how to make a complex subject like stock investment easier for people to understand. To solve this challenge, we utilized plain language instead of legal jargon, an easy to navigate application, and personalized recommendation to make the whole process be less overwhelming.
Backend Challenges: Originally, we only had a limited number of calls ( around 25 per request), which we very quickly exceeded. To combat this challenge we pivoted towards web scraping.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
The Figma design matches our Finterest prototype and we learned new technologies and gained valuable technical skills.
What we learned
We learned web scraping, functionality of routers, and using postman.
What's next for Finterest
The next steps for Finterest would be integrating additional feature such as, customized portfolio tracking to see their stocks in real time and receive notifications based on their stocks.
