Inspiration
Our group members have varying interest in finance and all noticed that there is a significant lack of fun or accessible information about different financial concepts for younger audiences, especially students whose schools may not have adequate funding to provide financial education classes or resources.
What it does
We decided on our project, FinTeach, to target these type of students, with two main goals: 1.) Provide financial education in a way that is accessible to younger students (middle or high school) 2.) Make it fun
How we built it
We wanted our app to be as accessible as possible to any user, so we decided to utilize Flutter. That way, no matter what kind of device (laptop, phone, etc.) the users are given the option to use the app in the way that most suits them.
Challenges we ran into
- The 11 hour drive from Ames, IA to Dallas, TX
- We had a few ideas for a project coming in to the hackathon, but turns out none of them fit the sponsor challenges, so we had to completely pivot and come up with something new
- Working with a new technology (Flutter) was daunting at first
- Since we've never really worked with Flutter, we had some weird issues / difficulties with deployment
- Couldn't find white boards to plan our project
Accomplishments that we're proud of
- Diving into and learning about a new technology (Flutter)
- Thinking about and developing our design with our app's target audience in mind
- Finding a white board (we searched for so long)
What we learned
Our group hadn't really used Flutter in the past, so we gained a lot of experience working with Flutter, Dart and Material to build out different parts of the UI.
What's next for FinTeach?
Features we would add if we had more time:
- Further tailor the question generation process to match the user's skill level
- Sub-modules for each topic to provide the user a more in-depth experience
- Dictation option for those with visual impairments, etc.
