Inspiration: FinSense was inspired by the need to make financial literacy accessible to underserved communities who often face barriers to traditional financial education. We saw a gap in easily accessible, culturally relevant financial advice and wanted to create a solution that could empower individuals to take control of their financial futures.
What it does: FinSense is an AI-powered financial literacy chatbot that provides personalized guidance on topics such as budgeting, savings, investments, and credit management. It's designed to be inclusive, accessible via web apps, SMS/USSD for basic phones, and voice commands, ensuring that people from diverse technological and linguistic backgrounds can benefit.
How we built it: We utilized advanced natural language processing (NLP) and machine learning to create a chatbot that can understand and provide tailored financial advice. The platform was developed to work across multiple channels (web, SMS/USSD, and voice) to ensure accessibility, with cultural adaptation and localization to meet the needs of various communities.
Challenges we ran into: One of the biggest challenges was ensuring that the chatbot’s advice was culturally relevant and tailored to specific community needs. Adapting financial information to diverse languages and literacy levels while maintaining accuracy was also a significant hurdle. Additionally, ensuring accessibility for users with basic phones and limited internet access required innovative solutions in terms of design and functionality.
Accomplishments that we're proud of: We’re proud of creating a solution that is truly inclusive and accessible to a wide audience, including people in remote or underprivileged areas. The ability to offer financial advice via SMS/USSD for basic phones and voice commands ensures that even individuals with limited digital literacy can benefit from the platform. Additionally, the cultural adaptation of our content is a huge achievement.
What we learned: We learned that financial literacy is not a one-size-fits-all concept, and it’s important to tailor advice to the needs, language, and cultural context of different communities. We also gained valuable insights into how technology can be leveraged to bridge educational gaps, even in low-tech environments.
What's next for FinSense: Next, we plan to expand the reach of FinSense by adding more languages and localized content. We’re also exploring partnerships with financial institutions and NGOs to broaden the impact and reach of the platform. In the future, we aim to integrate more advanced features such as AI-powered financial goal tracking, credit scoring advice, and even more personalized budgeting tools.
