FinQuest

Inspiration

Financial literacy is one of the most essential life skills, yet traditional methods fail to engage children meaningfully. Inspired by the gap between modern AI capabilities and child learning psychology, we built FinQuest — the world’s first adaptive gamified financial literacy platform.

What it does

FinQuest transforms financial education into an engaging journey by:

  • Adaptive AI algorithms that personalize difficulty in real time
  • Psychology-driven gamification with mastery-oriented goals and personalized rewards
  • Biometric learning adaptation, tracking micro-interactions to adjust teaching pace and content
  • Privacy-first architecture, ensuring COPPA++ compliance with zero-knowledge encryption

It doesn’t just teach — it adapts to every learner’s cognitive, emotional, and motivational state, making financial education fun, personalized, and impactful.

How we built it

  • Frontend: Next.js 14 (PWA with micro-frontend architecture for scalability)
  • Backend: NestJS + Express (event-driven microservices with CQRS)
  • Database: Supabase (PostgreSQL with temporal mastery tracking and skill dependency graph)
  • AI/ML Layer:
    • Contextual Multi-Armed Bandit with Thompson Sampling
    • Bayesian Knowledge Tracing++ for mastery modeling
    • Engagement Intelligence for fatigue and emotion detection
  • Content Generation: Azure OpenAI GPT-4o for personalized learning materials

Challenges we ran into

  • Designing emotion-aware AI that adapts without overwhelming the child
  • Integrating real-time biometric signals (mouse velocity, typing rhythm) into difficulty modeling
  • Balancing engagement and mastery while avoiding over-gamification
  • Ensuring child data privacy beyond compliance standards with federated learning and zero-knowledge architecture

Accomplishments that we’re proud of

  • Built the first EdTech architecture combining AI bandits, child psychology, and biometrics
  • Achieved sub-100ms real-time adaptation with predictive preloading and edge computing
  • Designed a multi-dimensional mastery model that captures conceptual understanding, transfer ability, and retention
  • Created a platform that is technically advanced while being child-centered and psychology-driven

What we learned

  • The potential of combining AI with psychology to enable true personalized learning
  • How biometric micro-interactions reveal engagement and frustration better than traditional metrics
  • The importance of designing privacy-first architectures in child-focused platforms

What’s next for FinQuest

  • Phase 2: Multimodal AI (voice, gesture, eye-tracking) and AI tutoring companions
  • Phase 3: AR/VR immersive financial simulations and haptic feedback for abstract concepts
  • Phase 4: Global scale with localized cultural adaptations and real-time language translation

FinQuest represents the future of child-centered financial education — adaptive, intelligent, and truly transformative.
