Inspiration
We were inspired by the gap in accessible, and engaging financial education for people who are new to the financial world. Traditional methods often fail to capture the attention of younger generations or individuals unfamiliar with the concepts. We wanted to create a solution that not only teaches crucial financial knowledge but also provides practical tools that users can use in real-life scenarios. Our focus on ""combining education with interactive experiences"" led us to the idea of a ""gamified platform"", which would make learning about finances both enjoyable and impactful.
What it does
FinQuest is a gamified web app designed to make financial literacy engaging and accessible. It offers mini-games focused on vital financial concepts such as credit history, fraud detection, risk management, market trends, asset management, and tax filing. The app goes beyond education by **incorporating an expense tracking tool that allows users to log their daily spending, set financial goals, and create personalized budgets. These tools work in tandem with the educational games to ensure users not only understand the theory behind financial concepts but also gain the skills to apply them in their own lives.
How we built it
We built FinQuest using web technologies like TypeScript, HTML and CSS integrating game mechanics that make learning fun. The mini-games were carefully designed to present financial topics in bite-sized, engaging formats that are easy for users to understand. On the technical side, we developed the expense tracking tool by building a secure and intuitive interface that allows users to input, categorize, and track their expenses over time. Together, the games and tools offer a comprehensive platform to **educate and empower users on their financial journeys.
Challenges we ran into
Designing an experience that was both educational and entertaining was a major challenge. Striking the right balance between the complexity of the financial concepts and keeping the mini-games fun was a key hurdle. Additionally, integrating the expense tracking tool smoothly into the app, ensuring it was easy to use, and ensuring data security for users’ financial information were critical challenges. We worked hard to keep things interactive and rewarding to maintain engagement.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
One of our biggest successes has been integrating the expense tracking and budgeting tool, allowing users to actively apply what they learn. The mini-games have also been **effective in breaking down complex financial topics, though some concepts proved harder to gamify in an engaging way. While we've created an interactive learning experience, certain areas—like **ensuring long-term user engagement and refining some game mechanics—still need improvement. There’s still work to be done, but we’re encouraged by the positive reception and the potential to make financial education more accessible and practical.
What we learned
We realized that simply presenting financial information isn’t enough—making it engaging and relatable is key to keeping users interested. While gamification proved to be a useful tool, not every financial concept was easy to translate into a game, and some areas still need refinement. Integrating the expense tracking tool reinforced the importance of providing practical applications alongside education, though ensuring users consistently engage with it remains a challenge. **Gathering user feedback has been invaluable, helping us identify what works and what doesn’t. As we continue iterating, we aim to strike a better balance between education, engagement, and usability.
What's next for FinQuest
We’re excited to expand FinQuest by developing a metaverse-based game aimed at offering an even more immersive and interactive learning experience. This will allow users to engage with financial concepts in a 3D world where they can **practice scenarios like managing credit, investing, and saving for future goals. We plan to further enhance the expense tracking tool with more personalized features, like automated expense categorization and suggestions for budgeting improvements. New mini-games and content are in the pipeline to ensure users continue learning and growing their financial skills, _making FinQuest a one-stop platform for financial literacy_.
