Inspiration

Managing personal finances and making big purchasing decisions is often overwhelming. Traditional budgeting apps only track past spending without providing proactive guidance. We wanted to build FinMate to answer one simple question: "Can I afford a big purchase right now without ruining my budget?"

What it does

FinMate simplifies personal money management into an interactive experience:

• Dashboard: Tracks income, expenses, cash flow, and spending trends at a glance.
• Smart Budgeting: Category tracking with automated alerts when limits are approaching.
• Purchase Simulator: Simulates major financial purchases using interactive controls to evaluate budget impact before spending.
• AI Assistant: Provides tailored financial guidance based on real-time balance and spending patterns.

How we built it

• Frontend: Built with React and Vite for a clean and fast UI.
• Backend: Powered by FastAPI (Python), handling secure request processing with custom X-API-Key middleware.
• AI Integration: Integrated with LLM models via server-side logic to analyze financial data and generate actionable advice.

Challenges we ran into

Connecting the React frontend with our FastAPI backend under strict time constraints was our biggest challenge. We had to ensure secure API key handling on the server side to protect secrets while configuring proper CORS rules for seamless communication.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

• Successfully connecting our custom FastAPI backend with the AI model to deliver real-time financial insights.
• Building an intuitive Purchase Simulator that makes financial math easy to understand.
• Developing a fully functional full-stack MVP during the hackathon.

What we learned

We gained hands-on experience in orchestrating modern React interfaces with lightweight Python microservices, prompt engineering for financial advice, and securing API endpoints.

• Gamification: Achievement badges and savings streaks for reaching financial goals.
