FinMate – Your Money. Understood.
Inspiration
Managing money is one of the biggest challenges people face, yet most budgeting apps only track transactions. They show where money went but fail to explain why spending patterns occur or what users should do next.
We wanted to build something fundamentally different , an AI financial agent that understands a user's financial life instead of simply recording it.
This idea led to FinMate, an intelligent financial operating system powered by AI agents, long-term memory, and a Financial Digital Twin.
What it does
FinMate creates a Financial Digital Twin for every user by combining income, expenses, assets, liabilities, goals, and historical financial behavior into a unified AI-readable profile.
Unlike traditional budgeting apps, FinMate:
- Calculates a real-time Financial Health Score
- Tracks long-term financial goals
- Detects spending leaks automatically
- Answers personalized financial questions using AI
- Simulates "What if?" financial scenarios
- Learns from every interaction using persistent memory
The AI doesn't generate generic advice,it reasons using the user's own financial history.
How we built it
We built FinMate using a modern AI architecture.
- Next.js + TypeScript + Tailwind CSS for the frontend
- FastAPI for backend services
- LangGraph to orchestrate the AI financial agent
- PostgreSQL for structured financial data
- Qdrant for long-term vector memory
- Neo4j for financial knowledge graph reasoning
- Groq + Llama for fast LLM inference
The system combines structured financial records, semantic memory, vector search, and graph reasoning into one intelligent pipeline.
What makes FinMate unique
The biggest innovation is the Financial Digital Twin.
Instead of only storing transactions, FinMate builds an evolving understanding of the user's finances.
The AI maintains three different memory systems:
- Semantic Memory for persistent financial preferences and goals
- Behavioral Memory for spending habits and recurring patterns
- Episodic Memory for important financial events
This enables deeply personalized financial reasoning that improves over time.
Challenges we ran into
Building a production-ready AI financial assistant required solving several challenges:
- Designing an agent workflow instead of a simple chatbot
- Combining structured databases with vector memory
- Maintaining long-term user context efficiently
- Ensuring deterministic fallbacks when AI services are unavailable
- Making financial recommendations explainable and transparent
Balancing speed, personalization, and reliability was one of the most difficult parts of the project.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
- Built a working AI financial agent powered by LangGraph
- Implemented persistent long-term financial memory
- Developed a Financial Digital Twin architecture
- Created personalized financial simulations
- Designed a scalable multi-database AI system using PostgreSQL, Neo4j, and Qdrant
- Built a complete MVP capable of reasoning over real financial data
What we learned
This project taught us that building an AI product goes far beyond connecting an LLM to an interface.
Creating a truly intelligent system requires memory, reasoning, orchestration, retrieval, structured data, and reliable fallbacks working together. We also learned how powerful agentic AI becomes when combined with domain-specific knowledge and persistent user context.
What's next for FinMate
Our vision is to build the AI Financial Copilot for millions of users.
Future plans include:
- Bank account integrations
- Investment portfolio intelligence
- Tax planning assistance
- Voice-based AI financial advisor
- Autonomous financial task execution
- Multi-agent financial planning system
- Personalized wealth-building recommendations
Our goal is simple:
Move beyond budgeting and build an AI that truly understands your money.
