Inspiration
Money influences almost every part of life, yet learning how to manage it is often stressful, intimidating, or left to chance. For many people, financial knowledge comes from trial and error — and the cost of making mistakes can be life-changing. We wanted to create a space where people could learn how money works without fear, pressure, or real-world consequences.
FinLit was inspired by the idea that learning should feel safe, approachable, and even comforting. Instead of overwhelming users with charts or jargon, we imagined financial literacy as a cozy experience — one where users can experiment with saving, investing, and giving, see the outcomes of their choices, and gradually build confidence over time.
By combining financial simulation with light game mechanics, FinLit turns abstract decisions into something tangible and rewarding. Users aren’t just managing numbers — they’re seeing how thoughtful financial choices can grow over time and translate into personal progress. Our goal is to shift financial learning from something people avoid into something they’re excited to explore.
What it does
FinLit is a cozy, game-inspired financial literacy web app where users can safely simulate real-world financial decisions. Users allocate virtual money across savings, investments, and charitable giving, and see how their choices affect growth over time. Profits can be used to unlock and customize personal items, turning financial progress into something tangible and motivating.
How we built it
FinLit is built around interactive learning. A visual dashboard shows how money flows between accounts, while each financial category offers simple controls for saving, investing, and automating contributions. Contextual tooltips and AI-powered feedback explain outcomes in plain language. Light gamification encourages consistency and long-term thinking without trivializing financial decisions.
Challenges we ran into
Balancing realism with simplicity was our main challenge. Financial concepts are complex, and we had to decide what to simplify without losing meaning. We also worked to ensure feedback felt supportive rather than overwhelming, and that game elements reinforced learning rather than distraction.
Accomplishments that we’re proud of
- Built a financial literacy tool that feels welcoming and low-pressure
- Designed a system that teaches through experimentation
- Made complex financial concepts more approachable for beginners
- Encouraged healthy financial habits through thoughtful gamification
What we learned
We learned that access to financial knowledge is uneven, and that confidence often matters as much as information. Providing a risk-free space to explore financial decisions, paired with clear explanations, can lower barriers to learning and help users build skills that support long-term financial stability.
