Inspiration
We wanted to create a game that was deceptively simple—but brutally challenging. Inspired by classic Western duels and the legendary endurance of cowboys, we imagined a digital standoff where players battle not with guns, but with their fingers. The result: Fingershowdown, a minimalist, addictive game that tests your patience, focus, and stamina—all in a Wild West setting.
What it does
Fingershowdown is a mobile game where the goal is simple: keep your finger on the button as long as you can. The longer you last, the more badges you earn, and the higher you climb on the leaderboard. With immersive Western visuals, a leather-textured interface, and epic Colorado backdrops, the game turns endurance into a high-stakes showdown. Players can track their progress on daily, weekly, and all-time leaderboards and unlock unique badges based on their performance.
How we built it
We built the app using Bolt.new on a ReactNative stack for cross-platform support (iOS, Android, and also mobile Web browsers), integrating Supabase for real-time leaderboards, and badge tracking. The UI design is custom-crafted with layered Western-themed elements—saddle leather textures, desert hues, and hand-drawn icons—to evoke the Old West. We also used Lottie animations for smooth badge reveals .
Challenges we ran into
- Ensuring the touch detection was accurate and uninterrupted, especially across devices with different screen behaviors.
- Creating a balance between visual polish and performance, particularly with background animations.
- Designing a game mechanic that’s incredibly simple, but still engaging over time.
- Implementing real-time leaderboards in a way that feels live and competitive without overwhelming the player.
- Audio... it is very complex to manage across different platforms.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
- Delivering a polished, thematic experience with a consistent Western aesthetic.
- Building a fully functioning cross-platform app in a short timeframe.
- Crafting a game mechanic that feels both fun and absurdly intense.
- Seeing people genuinely compete—and laugh—over something so simple when published the draft in reddit
What we learned
- Simplicity in gameplay requires complexity in execution—especially when every second matters.
- Thematic design can deeply enhance user immersion and make even basic mechanics memorable.
- Real-time features like leaderboards and badges drastically increase engagement.
- Small touches (sound design, haptics, visual transitions) make a huge difference in user perception.
What's next for Fingershowdown!
- Launching multiplayer “duel mode” where two players face off in real-time.
- Introducing seasonal badges and limited-time events.
- Adding customization options (finger skins, button styles, backgrounds).
- Integrating social sharing so players can brag about their longest hold.
- Expanding to web version and smartwatch mini-mode.
- And maybe… just maybe… adding a talking cowboy guide 👀
