Inspiration

We were inspired to build this project because we noticed that spending money on food was one of our biggest monthly expenses and you were tired of struggling to come up with meal plans. Additionally, we recognized that many people share this struggle and wanted to create a solution that could help busy individuals save time, money, and the hassle of figuring out what to eat.

What it does

With FinFood, you can quickly and easily find the restaurant you frequent the most and get personalized meal suggestions based on your preferences. But that's just the beginning! Once you've selected a meal, FinFood gives you two options: make it at home with step-by-step instructions with item cost breakdown or find nearby restaurants that offer the same meal with price points for each option. Say goodbye to mealtime indecision and hello to money-saving, delicious, and hassle-free dining with FinFood.

How we built it

To build our project, we first brainstormed and discussed various ideas for the project, considering its feasibility, relevance, and potential impact. We then finalized the project idea and began the development process.

Our back-end was written in Python, with the Flask framework serving as the backbone of the project. Flask provided an efficient and scalable development environment, allowing us to quickly build a robust and reliable back-end system. For the front-end, we used a combination of JavaScript frameworks, including React and Angular, to create a seamless and intuitive user interface.

Challenges we ran into

Building this project presented several challenges, especially the limited time frame of 24 hours to complete it. Additionally, as a team, we faced the obstacle of not having prior experience with front-end UI design, which required us to learn and implement new skills quickly. Despite these challenges, we remained focused and committed to delivering a functional and user-friendly app that could help solve the common struggle of meal planning and decision-making.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We are proud of several accomplishments during this project, including the fact that despite our inexperience developing front-end UI, we never gave up. We also integrated third-party APIs to suggest personalized meal options based on user preferences and frequented restaurants, and provide data on local restaurants and menu items.

What we learned

Throughout our experience, we learned that having great ideas is only the beginning of a successful project. It's not enough to simply put ideas down on paper; you also need to have a solid plan and execution strategy in place to turn those ideas into reality. We learned that a well-structured approach is critical to the success of any project. This includes defining clear objectives, establishing a timeline, and breaking down the project into manageable tasks.

What's next for FinFood

Moving forward, we plan to partner with Capital One to provide our users with even more savings opportunities. One idea we're considering is leveraging Capital One's rewards program to provide users with cashback or discounts on their food purchases through our app. We also would like to add plenty of new features to improve the experience of FinFood, such as implementing a cost breakdown feature to help users save money on their meals and spending plans to help users meet their financial goals. This would not only help users save money on their meals but also encourage healthy and cost-effective eating habits.
