Inspiration
As an art enthusiast who’s seen friends struggle to value inherited art, I wanted to demystify art appraisal. Western art markets are rich but exclusive—so I built a tool to make professional-grade valuation accessible to everyone, no fancy degrees required.
What it does
FineArt AI lets users upload artwork photos for instant valuation (low/average/high estimates), style/artist identification, authenticity analysis, and comparable auction history. A $99 premium report offers a formal, downloadable appraisal document for insurance/estate planning.
How we built it
I started with wireframing in Figma to map user flows (upload → processing → results). Built the frontend with React for smooth UI, used Node.js for backend logic to calculate valuation ranges, and AWS for secure file handling. Designed custom loading animations to mimic AI analysis for intuitive feedback.
Challenges we ran into
Balancing minimalist gallery-style UI (per high-end art aesthetics) with functional clarity was tough—too much white space risked confusion, too little lost the premium feel. Also, calibrating valuation logic to reflect real Western art market trends required deep research to keep estimates credible.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
Created a tool that feels both approachable and premium, matching Western art collectors’ expectations. The auction history section (curated to reflect real auction house norms) and clear disclaimers strike the right balance between utility and transparency.
What we learned
I deepened my understanding of Western art market dynamics and user trust—disclaimers and clear value framing were critical for credibility. I also mastered React animation hooks to make the "AI processing" experience feel seamless and engaging.
What's next for this project
Expand the art style database to include more niche Western movements (e.g., Pop Art, Baroque). Add support for high-res scans to refine analysis, and explore partnerships with small auction houses to integrate real market data for more precise valuations.
