Inspiration

I come from an Oil and Gas contracts background with a pretty involved use of CLM (Contract Lifecycle Management) software. At the last professional contracts conference I attended, visiting with the different CLM software kiosks I mused that these tools exist at the enterprise and commercial level but not at the personal use level - running a household with kids and work and life, contracts actually come up quite often in personal life so I wanted to try my hand at building a personal CLM. Despite the nature of contracts, this tool is not intended to be a legal tool, but a support for reading comprehension and task workflows for individuals.

What it does

Fine Print is an AI agent that reads and manages the agreements in your life: leases, mortgages, phone and internet plans, insurance policies, warranties, subscriptions, and anything else with terms and conditions.

Sample agreements are provided on the welcome screen and are fictional.

  • Upload any agreement:** (PDF/photo) and the agent pulls out the terms that matter: parties, dates related to costs, renewal terms, cancellation windows, penalties, etc.
  • Add dates to calendar:** the agent can add the dates to a calendar as individual actions or as an ics file for tracking deadlines or tasks.
  • Saving contacts to phone:** the agent is able to pull key names, parties and other contacts from the agreement and store them on your phone
  • Camera capture with page order, retake prompt and add a page:** The agent allows user to take photos of paper documents and is able to sort the document in order and store the photos.
  • Plain-language summaries:** explain what you agreed to without the legalese.
  • Suggested step and action checkboxes:** agent will provide user some suggested steps they can take according to the content of the agreement
  • Shareable celebration post:** for creating moments for important or milestone agreements like mortgages
  • Five personalized themes including Large Script:** for light, dark, colour or font reading preferences
  • Contract decision workflow:** Fine Print notices the key dates of note or contract consequence for the user and asks if the user wants to take action on it. Fine Print explains the next steps, asks if it can help you and if yes, helps draft the any communication the user needs to provide (demo example is an end of tenancy notice for an expired lease).

How we built it

This app was built in Claude in plain conversation and app testing. CLM software can be quite involved and optimized in features. Realistically for the timeline of this hackathon I wanted to put together enough depth of features for demo, where other features are less thought through and are placeholder only. Some UI concepts are from personal experience with CLMs and ERP use at the enterprise level. The stack for this build is with Claude Code, Vercel and plain JavaScript. Fine Print was built around the rule that the AI decides what to say, and the app decides what is allowed which allows for some of the more direct calculation steps of date tasks in the app versus guessing or approximations that can be inaccurate.

Challenges we ran into

Many of the concepts around deployment I honestly have a low understanding of, and I will need to do this a few times to understand them better.

The steps from the hackathon helped me progress. Testing was quite iterative for me to understand initial ideas are incomplete and require higher specificity in prompting. I had low understanding or know-how when encountering bugs, and no control there.

Making a video walkthrough was another category of obstacle, no previous experience, unsure of where or how to start and ultimately the goal was to simply complete.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

I am quite pleased to have participated and have shipped for this hackathon for one. This is not in my previous skillset so the entire process was new through and through.

I enjoyed that because I am building my own app I can do silly things like build in different colour themes or choose Edmonton Oilers colours to my own taste or preference (Go Oilers!), or choose an emoji for the profile icon.

I hope Fine Print reflects some of my own experiences with CLMs and contracts and tools that help a person which is the intent of shipping this app.

What we learned

I learned that timeline and skillset greatly impact the depth of app I am able to put together. I also touched on learning some of the concepts around development, fairly superficial still, but it helps me understand my own communication improvement areas or skill development directions.

From the CLM side, building this app helped me think about contract workflows from a personal app approach rather than traditional CLM software use at a desktop at the enterprise level. It helped me think about user starting points of CLM use and trade-offs in comprehension vs simplicity and organization and other factors that would come into play for a user.

I also learned what needed to be left out at this point in time to get to a finish line for a product completion.

What's next for Fine Print: AI Agent for your personal contracts

Many features remain for Fine Print that can be developed:

  • Login and data security, agreements and related documents will be kept with sufficient confidentiality for users such as bring your own AI or storage options.
  • Inbox integration, so the app might sift through an inbox to pull relevant agreements or documents for storage in the app
  • Action drafting, such as cancellation letters, warranty claims, and dispute emails, generated from the contract terms
  • Profile onboard development, so users can optimize their agent chats based on personal traits
  • Household sharing, so partners can see the same agreements and deadlines
  • Comparison at renewal, so you know whether the new terms are worse than the old ones
  • Jurisdiction awareness, flagging where local consumer or tenancy law may override what the contract says
