Inspiration
The recent influx of refugees in multiple countries around the world resulted in rather poor outcomes for both refugees and countries where refugees have been seeking refuge. A central issue in the refugee crisis is the availability of refugee shelters. Large numbers of people move to a single location, and hundreds of thousands of people are unable to find their way to a safe place. Had they been equipped with sufficient information as to the locations where they can get help and the sheer number of locations available to them worldwide, efficient distribution, and adequate safety can be ensured.
What it does
This app helps refugees find their way to a shelter of their choice among the listed options through a triple view map displaying the pinned location, the directions to the shelter, and the street view at the shelter.
How we built it
This web page was built using a mixture of Python, HTML, Javascript and CSS, along with Google API tools.
Challenges we ran into
It was challenging to transfer the variables successfully, and ensure that the correct variables were used in order to render the interactive site properly. Although we are familiar with Python, the other languages and Google API tools were unfamiliar to us.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
Yet, we managed to pick up sufficient knowledge within the span of the hackathon to come up with the working product.
What we learned
We definitely picked up more knowledge of the other programming languages, how to transfer variables, and overall gained confidence in an area we were initially unfamiliar with.
What's next for FindRefuge
Potential improvements we could make to FindRefuge include links to legal aid in the respective countries, phone numbers to call, and live updates of capacity and availability in the respective refugee shelters.
