Inspiration
Political organizations and activists often encourage people to contact their senators express opinions about an event or piece of legislation by posting boilerplate content on social media. Unfortunately, boilerplate letters are often disregarded by congresspeople. We wanted to create an information hub that empowers people to contact their legislators with unique content.
What it does
Provides contact information for your state senators, and gives tips for how to write them a letter.
How we built it
We built this web app using Python, CSS, HTML, and JavaScript, as well as flask for the backend.
Challenges we ran into
While the four of us have prior experience with basic programming abstractions, none of us have ever used HTML, CSS, or javascript, so both creating the entire frontend and connecting it to the backend were particularly challenging.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
While there are many websites that do similar things to findMySenator, we believe that our web app provides a streamlined way of accessing this data. We're just happy it works.
What we learned
In addition to learning a lot about CSS, HTML, and JavaScript, we gained a deep appreciation for even the simplest websites.
What's next for findMySenator
We hope to eventually be able to add functionality to view contact information for representatives and more local government officials.
