FindMyProfessor is a website that connects driven students directly with faculty-posted roles. Excels in allowing students to search their university and find positions that match their career goals.
Inspiration: We were inspired to create this website because of a frustration with how hidden some academic/research roles could be. Professors need students and students need professors, so what better way to unite them than to join in a transparent platform, ensuring the best student talent finds the most impactful research, right on their own campus.
What it does: This website is a two-sided marketplace tailored specifically for the university ecosystem. Students start on a homepage and can immediately search for their specific university without a sign-in prompt. The position cards give students the critical details upfront, and these cards are created by professors and other university faculty.
How we built it: This was built mainly on HTML. We took inspiration from Canvas's website as well as instagram messages, since that is what is familiar to students.
Challenges we ran into: One member was pre-med, with no prior experience with coding. Implementing a database with no prior experience was also something that felt daunting, yet time proved to be on our side.
Accomplishments that we're proud of: Implementing a backend, good work ethic, creating features for both learners and professors, and making a friendly user interface.
What we learned: We learned how to collaborate in GitHub without ruining each other's progress. We also learned what systems need to be put in place so students can have better opportunities.
What's next for FindmyProfessor: Static elements can be turned dynamic through the migration of session storage into a database. This includes the ability for faculty to actively manage applicant pipelines, review attached resumes or transcripts, and update role statuses.
