Why...this?
Did you know there's a type of fungus called Jack O'Lantern? :o
As a kid, I was not really a fan of mushrooms, but then they grew on me (...get it?). Now, I want to study mushrooms and become a mushroom pixel artist/photographer one day!
I made findingfungi - a 2D Platform game to make it fun and interactive for anyone sharing my interest to learn some fun facts about fungi!!
How does it work?
Note: I hope you won't be offended by broccoli haters (such as me).
A group of pretty fun guys* remain the only survivors in this post-apocalyptic world where all food sources have been wiped out except somehow...mushrooms and broccolis!
Unfortunately, they don't know anything about mushrooms and they all hate broccolis - in fact, they dislike broccolis so much that if they eat too much of them, they get bad Broccolitis reactions and become just a little sick. Oh right! In this world, mushrooms also happen to be a whole lot more nutritious than broccolis, given that you find the yummy, edible ones. Warning: there are worse consequences than Broccolitis associated with consuming poisonous mushrooms.
In order to help your friends and yourself to last longer in this new bizarre world, you, obviously the most fun one out of all the fun guys, embarked on an adventure, starting with 5 health, trying to expand your mushroom knowledge by trial and error with supplementary broccolis (but not too many!) and to not die. Fear not, as you gain more fungi wisdom, your start new levels with more health!
Every mushroom you "find" and "eat", a pop-up window will tell you (hopefully) something new about a type of fungus in the world.
*guy is used as a genderless term here. :]
What I thought were fun:
- going to my first hackathon
- using JavaScript for the first time
- making a game for the first time
- using JavaScript to make a game for the first time
- learning about sprites/spritesheets, game loop, physics engine, and more
- finding the closest-to-ideal sound effects
- debugging with visual feedbacks!
- coming up with ways to make the platformer easier for folks like me (who struggled with Super Mario Bros) -> solution: unlimited double/triple/quadruple...jumps!
- coming up with bad mushroom/fungi puns ;)
I hope you'd have as mush fun playing the game as I had making it.
Only a little less fun:
- making my first game while being a JavaScript newbie :'(
- spending possibly hours finding the right tools + putting sprites together
- not having as much time as I'd like for the demo
Next for findingfungi?
- make new levels & create game start page
- import mushroom database -> more fungi and fun facts!
- host the web game somewhere
- brainstorm fun ways to handle "death conditions" without death
