Inspiration
Moving out for the first time is one of the most exciting milestones in young adulthood, but for people from disadvantaged or marginalised backgrounds, achieving financial independence can be significantly more difficult.
Limited access to financial education, unstable income, rising living costs, insecure housing, and unexpected expenses can make seemingly simple financial decisions overwhelming. Many people only learn about rental bonds, utility connection fees, upfront moving costs, budgeting, and emergency savings only after they are already struggling to afford them.
We wanted to build something that makes financial education accessible, practical, and engaging, particularly for people who may not have access to traditional financial education or financial support.
We asked ourselves:
What if learning personal finance and preparing for independence was as engaging, habit-forming, and rewarding as Duolingo?
That question sparked Findependence: a duolingo-like, financial education companion designed to help young people build the knowledge, confidence, and savings habits needed to become financially independent.
Rather than assuming that everyone starts from the same financial position, Findependence focuses on 'scale-able' progress. Users can set realistic goals based on their own circumstances and gradually build towards milestones such as an emergency buffer, rental bond, moving costs, and sustainable weekly spending.
Our goal is to make financial literacy less intimidating and more accessible to people who are often underserved by traditional financial education.
