Inspiration

We are incredibly driven by our ability to ignite a passion for good, through the use of technology.

What it does

findEarth is an interactive globe that delivers current, curated, summarized news about climate change- about the places that matter most to you.

How we built it

Are front-end tracks your finger on the screen, it sends the geo-location of your touch to our back-end that then queries newsapi.org, an api that aggregates news from the entire world (so cool!). With our location-based intelligent search, we find the top 20 most relevant articles which we then further curate by harnessing the power openai's gpt. We find the best article url, download it, summarize it and return it to the user- so they can focus on what matters most!

Challenges we ran into

Time! We realllly were fighting against the clock on this one. Skipping nights of sleep was very much a prerequisite for us to pull this off.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We are mostly first time hackers! We're super proud of our super tight-knit, intercultural, truly global team (we're from 4 continents!) Being able to galvanize the troops was truly an exhilarating experience.

I have long wanted to encompass the power of an llm, in a gui interface.
With that in mind, I conceived the idea for a climate-change awareness app when the category of Earth was announced.
Having a multi-skilled team is super important but I came with just one other team member so I spoke to (read, interviewed) lots of folks until I found the perfect teammates to bring on to the project. Everybody really gave their 100 to this. My role was to be the PM, following up with the team, making sure we're focused and synced up.
I built out some key functionality of the back-end (the gpt integrations) as well as some of the front end design. -oh, I also wrote the words for the video we made.

All in all I'm glad I was able to learn as much as I did. My teammates know so much that I don't and learning from them was a joy I look forward to repeating many more times in the future.

Moshe Klein
I developed backend logic, setting up Spring Boot environment for back end, querying Newsapi.org and mapping response to an object. Utilized the data in that response to query OpenAI API (GPT 3.5) request developed by teammate to ask GPT to choose URL of most relevant article from newsAPI results. Retrieved article content from URL then queried teammate’s API call for summarized article.

Nate Agudelo
Participated in a collaborative effort to conceptualize and create the front-end web page, employing a diverse range of web frameworks, including Node.js, in conjunction with design tools such as Figma. Additionally, produced a video presentation aimed at enhancing the user appeal of our project and presenting our product in its best interest.

Uzma Hamid
Designed and implemented interactive front-end web page utilizing NodeJs, and Cesium.js to build an interactive globe, which took coordinates and queried Java Springboot API endpoint. Summarized articles specific to chosen location were displayed to end user.
