Inspiration
One way to discourage single-use plastic bottles is to reveal more free fountain locations. According to TheRoundUp, around 155 million US adults are using a reusable water bottle in 2024. In a time of dehydration and environmentally-friendly practices, this software can find the nearest fountains in real-time.
What it does
Users can choose to login and declare and rate fountain locations. As well, users can use the search engine to find the nearest fountains.
How we built it
With a React frontend, Django backend, MongoDB Atlas database, we used git commands to piece this program together.
Challenges we ran into
Our biggest challenge was to let go of a member due to a severe bed-ridden illness, forcing us to work more with less time. Due to time-constraints and high technical complexity as intermediate hackers, we tried prioritizing key features and platforms. In the small time window, we had to re-consider time-consuming yet unique implementations for overall completion.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We had almost no experience with Google Maps API, MongoDB Atlas, React, Figma and Git, so this was one big implementation challenge.
What we learned
Besides the new technical skills, we also learned team dynamics, since our age difference is 11 years.
What's next for FindAFountain
We hope to expand the uses of FindAFountain, including a map of local recycling bins, washrooms, rental bikes, etc. We also hope to make this into a mobile app for convenience and emergency. To make a revenue, users can sell collections of locations, such as vacation routes, movie locations, etc.
