Inspiration
Growing up in a small community in Oregon, I saw how hard nonprofits worked to find volunteers—and how many people wanted to give back but struggled to find roles that fit their lives. I wanted to bridge that gap: create a space where a college student with 1 hour/week for tutoring, or a remote worker who loved graphic design, could easily find meaningful volunteer work.
What it does
VolunteerMatch connects individuals with nonprofit opportunities aligned to their skills (tutoring, event support), time commitment, and interests (animal welfare, climate action). It lets volunteers track hours for resumes, join team events like park cleanups, and gives nonprofits tools to recruit and measure community impact.
How we built it
We started with wireframing in Figma to prioritize a minimalist, card-based UI. Using React and JavaScript, we built the core matching engine to power filterable opportunity listings, then integrated Chart.js for nonprofit impact dashboards. We added PDFKit to enable one-click hour summary downloads, all built on a Node.js foundation with HTML/CSS for responsive design.
Challenges we ran into
Balancing simplicity with functionality was tough—we wanted filters to work seamlessly (alone or combined) without overwhelming users. We also had to design impact visualizations that were clear but meaningful, avoiding cluttered charts while still showing key metrics like total volunteer hours and community reach.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We created a platform that feels intuitive for both volunteers and nonprofits: 50+ opportunity listings filter in real time, remote roles are clearly segmented, and the hour tracker delivers professional, shareable summaries. The nonprofit dashboard’s candidate management interface also strikes the right balance between usability and depth.
What we learned
We learned that user-centric design isn’t just about aesthetics—it’s about understanding pain points (e.g., volunteers needing resume-ready hour logs, nonprofits needing clear recruitment data). We also honed our skills in integrating third-party tools (Chart.js, PDFKit) to extend core functionality without sacrificing performance.
What's next for this project
We plan to expand the opportunity categories to include more niche roles (e.g., virtual environmental advocacy) and add localized features for European and US regions, like country-specific nonprofit partnerships. We also want to build out premium tools for nonprofits, like automated candidate outreach, to amplify their impact further.
