Inspiration
We undertook the HPCC challenge because we were excited to work with a new language ECL, and because we saw the challenge as a way to expand and test our programming concept
How we built it
We developed the backend using ECL where we took in four datasets, Crime, Weather, State, and Crime Rate, using these datasets we developed an algorithm to calculate a Paradise Score, which gives the user a integer that rates the desirability of a specific state in respect to the user's preferences. The front end was developed using React, Express, JS, Tailwind, and Daisy UI, and we optimized the interface to enable the user to select their preferences based on button clicks, which would redirect the user to a separate window where they could view their results.
Challenges we ran into
Initially we started off with a different challenge, but we ran into some team difficulties, so we had to pivot to this challenge. Learning ECL was also difficult as they overall syntax and structure was very different from traditional languages.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We were able to develop a fully-fledged project at the end of the hackathon, and make so many new friends along the way.
What we learned
We learned the importance of organizing the project from the start, and making sure everyone understood the approach we were taking. We also learned how to approach new languages and the steps to fully understand how to effectively use those languages.
