Inspiration
As a car buyer frustrated by opaque dealer rate markups, I wanted to level the playing field. I saw friends overpaying for auto loans because they couldn’t easily compare offers—so I built AutoLoanOptimizer to make transparent, data-driven loan decisions accessible to everyone.
What it does
AutoLoanOptimizer is a free web tool that lets users compare auto loan APRs across lenders, optimize loan terms (36–84 months), calculate early repayment savings, and detect refinance opportunities. It breaks down total interest costs, monthly payments, and savings with clear visuals and real-time updates.
How we built it
We started with core financial logic—coding the standard amortization formula ( M = P × \frac{r(1+r)^n}{(1+r)^n - 1} ) to calculate monthly payments. We built the UI with React for responsiveness, used Chart.js for interest comparison charts, and structured the app into three key pages (main comparison, early repayment, refinance detector) for intuitive navigation. Backend logic runs on Node.js, with data stored in MongoDB for fast rate retrieval.
Challenges we ran into
The biggest hurdle was ensuring real-time calculations (under 2 seconds) while handling edge cases—like invalid loan amounts or no available rates for a credit tier. We also struggled to balance detailed financial data with a simple, non-overwhelming UI for non-experts.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We created a tool that’s 100% usable without login, fully responsive on mobile/desktop, and accurately highlights the most cost-effective loan terms. Users can instantly see how extra payments or refinancing impact their total costs—something no single dealer or lender offers upfront.
What we learned
We deepened our understanding of financial amortization logic and user-centric design for financial tools. We also learned to prioritize error handling for edge cases (e.g., negative loan amounts) to keep the tool robust and user-friendly. Most importantly, we saw how simplifying complex financial data empowers users to make smarter decisions.
What's next for this project
We plan to add regional rate customization (tailored to US/EU markets), integrate user feedback to refine the UI, and expand lender data to include more credit unions and online lenders. We also want to add a mobile app version and a feature to track rate trends over time.
