Inspiration

As a lifelong pet parent, I watched friends struggle to decode pet insurance jargon—wasting hours comparing plans that didn’t fit their dog’s breed or cat’s pre-existing conditions. I wanted to build something that cut through the noise, putting personalized, clear comparisons in the hands of U.S. pet owners who just want the best for their furry family.

What it does

PetInsurance Compare lets U.S. cat/dog owners input their pet’s profile (breed, age, health) to filter eligible insurance plans. It offers side-by-side comparisons of coverage, highlights exclusions, rates claims processes, and calculates if self-funding vet costs beats insurance—all without page reloads or login.

How we built it

We started with wireframing the user flow (focused on mobile-first responsiveness), then built the frontend with React/HTML/CSS for the dynamic input and comparison sections. Backend logic (plan filtering, calculator math: $selfFund = annualVetCost × timeHorizon; $insuranceTotal = (monthlyPremium×12×timeHorizon) + (annualVetCost - coveredExpenses)×timeHorizon) was coded in Node.js, with provider data stored in MongoDB. We integrated Chart.js for visual cost comparisons and referral tracking APIs for commission links.

Challenges we ran into

The biggest hurdle was balancing accuracy with simplicity—translating complex insurance rules into plain language without losing critical details. We also struggled with mobile responsiveness for the 4-plan comparison section; we solved it with horizontal scrolling and toggleable views. Validating age/ cost inputs in real-time (e.g., blocking negative values) required iterative testing with real pet owners.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We built a tool that’s 100% user-centric—no bias toward high-commission plans, just coverage strength. The real-time calculator and instant plan filtering work seamlessly, and beta testers (U.S. pet owners aged 25–65) reported cutting their insurance research time by 70%.

What we learned

I learned how to translate niche industry rules (pet insurance exclusions, claims ratings) into intuitive UI/UX. I also gained expertise in referral tracking (invisible to users) and balancing data accuracy with accessibility—critical for users who aren’t tech-savvy but need clear financial guidance.

What's next for This project

We plan to expand to include more U.S. providers, add a feature to save comparison results (no login required), and integrate user-reported claims experiences to update ratings in real-time. Long-term, we’ll explore adapting the logic for other regions while keeping the core focus on clarity and personalization for pet parents.
