Inspiration

As a newsletter creator myself, I struggled to find meaningful cross-promotion opportunities—many creators in my network faced the same issue. I wanted a tool that didn’t just connect us, but matched us strategically, based on audience size, niche, and reliability. The goal was to turn random swaps into intentional partnerships that drive real growth.

What it does

NewsletterSwap is a SaaS platform that helps newsletter creators discover compatible swap partners, schedule collaborations, track subscriber growth, and evaluate partners via a reputation system. It also offers tiered plans to scale with creators’ needs, from basic matching to advanced analytics.

How we built it

We started with core user research to map pain points, then built a React frontend for the dashboard/calendar/analytics views, paired with a Node.js backend. We integrated Chart.js for data visualization, designed a reputation scoring algorithm, and built a calendar module for swap scheduling—all optimized for a seamless, minimalist UI.

Challenges we ran into

Balancing AI matching accuracy with usability was tough—we had to refine the algorithm to prioritize both similarity (audience size) and complementarity (niches) without overcomplicating the UI. We also faced hurdles in making analytics intuitive for non-technical creators, requiring iterative design tweaks.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We created a platform that puts creators first: the AI matching works for both small (1K+ subs) and mid-sized newsletters, the analytics are actionable (not just numbers), and the reputation system builds trust—something missing in casual swap communities.

What we learned

User-centric design beats "feature bloat": creators didn’t want complex tools, just clear, reliable ways to connect and measure success. We also learned that tiered pricing (Free/Premium) needs to balance accessibility with value—no paywalls for core functionality.

What's next for this project

We’re adding integration with top newsletter tools (Mailchimp, Substack) to automate swap execution, building a mobile-responsive interface, and expanding the reputation system to include peer feedback. We also plan to roll out a premium feature for priority matching and advanced growth forecasting.
