Inspiration

Before we started, we knew that the 3 of us live on opposite sides of the world. There are many difficulties around us, some which are the same around the world, and some which are different. But, when we saw the small businesses topic, we all connected with the fact that small businesses need our help because of Coronavirus. According to the Facebook & Small Business Roundtable, about ⅓ of small businesses had temporarily stopped operating, and by mid-May more than half had laid off or furloughed employees. Therefore, we came up with an idea involving building an online platform for small local restaurants. It allows them to attract more customers which compensate for the loss of customers caused by COVID 19 public health policy, such as the lockdown and limited number of customers.

What it does

With Find My Food, small food businesses can put their own profile on the platform. These businesses will be able to put in their contact details, types of cuisine, types of food onto the website for potential users to find. These users can filter their results into a specific type of cuisine and/or specific location. By giving these small businesses a platform to advertise to locals, we are helping them lower the impact of Covid-19 on them. Additionally, we are giving local people some recommendations to try new restaurants with delicious cuisine, helping the small businesses gain more customers.

How we built it

Our first step was planning what we wanted to make, we made a list in a Google Docs and came up with a couple of different ideas. Then, we selected our website idea and started to work on a blueprint. We used Figma to make a prototype of the interface of our website. After finishing the blueprint, we have started to do coding in VSCode, we used HTML5, CSS3 and JavaScript to build our website, the autocomplete search bar feature, and login/sign up functions.

Challenges we ran into

  1. Implementing javascript
  2. Implementing autocomplete feature for search bar
  3. Transferring JavaScript variables from one page to another page
  4. Working with teammates in different time zones
  5. Formatting code to fit with cloud hosting services

Accomplishments that we're proud of

  1. Made a search bar with an auto-complete function.
  2. Implemented Google Map into the shop details
  3. Good UI and UX design

What we learned

  1. Advanced our skills with Figma, HTML5, CSS3, Javascript
  2. Make autocomplete search bar in HTML5 and Javascript
  3. Using Git and Github to do collaboration and backup
  4. Layout and design for better interaction with the web application
  5. Teamwork, communication, and perseverance

What's next for Find My Food

  1. Rating system
  2. Ordering system
  3. Commenting system
  4. Crowd-sourced Photo Gallery
