Inspiration

We came up with this idea because as first-year college students in an increasingly digital world, we were finding it more challenging than ever to find a group of peers to work on passion projects to solve real problems. There is no dedicated and personalizable platform for students to find and create projects that we are passionate about. Students have settled to using social media in an attempt to connect, however, Find + Create is built explicitly for this purpose. We have created a user-friendly interface dedicated to helping students work together to change the world.

What it does

Find + Create allows users to create a project, to find groups of like-minded students to collaborate with, and search through an expansive database of preexisting projects catered to each and every user through detailed search filters. We also have a project spotlight feature that highlights specific achievements and impacts that students are having on their communities, inspiring others to do the same.

How I built it

The front-end framework was built utilizing a Bootstrap template. Customizations were added to create multiple webpage links, buttons, forms, and other display features using HTML and CSS, that is hosted with Firebase. The back-end code is written in JavaScript utilizing the Cloud Firestore database in Firebase. We began the process of data integration from forms on the web page to the database. We have also begun the process of utilizing the Google Maps JavaScript API to display a map locating projects in a specific community.

Challenges I ran into

This was the team's first hackathon so we grew exponentially through the process. None of us had much prior experience in web development but were able to learn how to do front and back end and integrate the two components by working together and learning from one another.

Accomplishments that I'm proud of

One thing we were really proud of was seeing our idea come together to become a tangible product. All of us were new to hackathons and web development, but we played on our strengths to focus on different components while also teaching and learning from one another. We strongly believe that over the past two days, we have created and developed an idea that can truly make an impact and has the potential to grow and succeed in a new reality.

What I learned

One thing we learned collectively as a group was how to collaborate across different platforms as a team to accomplish a common goal.

What's next for Find + Create

We plan to have full data integration with the database with the forms and have full functionality with the Google Maps JavaScript API. We also see the potential to expand this platform to cater to other types of projects in the future.
