Inspiration

Have you ever held onto a piece of recycling, but couldn't find a bin to put it in? We aim to solve this problem with our web application, which can locate the nearest bin to a user's current location on the University campus. The app can locate many different types of recycling bins, plus general waste, so you'll always be able to dispose of your rubbish in the most eco-friendly way possible. We hope that our app will contribute towards a greener, more sustainable campus.

What it does

The app allows the user to input which University campus they're on - Central or Kings - and which type of rubbish they want to dispose of. The app then generates a map which shows the user their closest bin of the given type.

How we built it

This application was built with node.js, css, html and javascript. We used Git for Version control

Challenges we ran into

The Map API was quite complicated and difficult to implement how we wanted, as well as the challenge of using latiude and longitude coordinates of bins and calculating the closest one to the devices current location.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We're quite proud of getting the map to work so interactively as well as the message and potentials for what this app could be in future

What we learned

How to work with map API, different map APIs out there, as well as the various options for hosting and domain names that we could've used

What's next for Find a Bin

Find a Bin could be extended to not only just campus contexts, and encouraged to be used by the citizens of Edinburgh. It could also be easily extended for showing how to recycle multiple different types as recycleables, as well as extended into other sustainable activies such as locating nearest bike routes.
