Inspiration

Most people manage finances across 5 different places — a budgeting app, a spreadsheet for investments, a calculator for retirement, sticky notes for goals. None of it talks to each other. We wanted to build the one dashboard that replaces all of it: a personal CFO for individuals and small business owners who want real visibility into their money without the chaos.

What it does

FinAxis is a full-stack finance management platform with six core modules:

  • Budget Tracker — set category budgets, log transactions manually or bulk-import via CSV/Excel, visualize spending vs budget
  • Net Worth Tracker — add assets and liabilities, track net worth over time with monthly snapshots
  • Investment Portfolio — log stocks, mutual funds, FDs, crypto, gold, SIPs; auto-calculate P&L and CAGR
  • Retirement Planner — input age, savings, contribution, return rate; get inflation-adjusted corpus projections with Conservative / Moderate / Aggressive scenarios
  • Goal-Based Savings — create goals (Emergency Fund, House, Vacation, etc.), track progress, get on-track/behind status
  • Reports & Insights — monthly summaries, YTD overview, smart rule-based insights, PDF/CSV export

Everything is tied together by a Financial Health Score (0–100) on the home dashboard — calculated from budget adherence, net worth growth, goal progress, and debt ratio.

How we built it

Built entirely on MeDo — described the full feature set, business logic, and DB schema in a structured prompt, and MeDo scaffolded the React frontend, Supabase backend, and all module logic. Charts via Recharts, CSV parsing via Papa Parse, Excel via SheetJS. Dark-themed UI with sidebar navigation, responsive across desktop and mobile.

Challenges we ran into

  • Getting the retirement corpus formula right — inflation-adjusted future value calculation needed explicit correction from the default output
  • CSV auto-categorization edge cases: duplicate detection and "Uncategorized" fallback logic required careful prompt iteration
  • Financial Health Score normalization — balancing four different metrics into a single 0–100 number without it feeling arbitrary

Accomplishments that we're proud of

  • Six fully functional finance modules in a single cohesive app — built without writing a single line of code manually
  • Retirement planner with scenario toggling (Conservative / Moderate / Aggressive) that actually uses correct financial math
  • CSV/Excel import with template downloads across Budget, Net Worth, and Investment modules — making onboarding fast for non-technical users
  • Clean, data-rich dark UI that feels like a premium product, not a hackathon prototype

What we learned

  • Prompt specificity is everything with AI builders — vague features get vague implementations; detailed business logic in the prompt gets real logic in the output
  • MeDo handles full-stack scaffolding well when you feed it a structured requirements doc rather than a casual description
  • Financial calculations need to be explicitly spelled out — never assume the AI will pick the right formula

What's next for FinAxis

  • Bank account API integration for automatic transaction sync
  • Real-time stock price feeds for live portfolio P&L
  • Recurring transaction automation and bill reminders via email/SMS
  • Debt payoff calculator module (avalanche + snowball strategies)
  • Mobile app (React Native)
  • Multi-currency portfolio support
