Inspiration

I was inspired by Tangerine Bank’s mission to empower everyday Canadians to take back control of their financial lives. When asking the question, "How can we genuinely increase Tangerine clients’ financial health?", we realized there was a massive disconnect between how much people earn and how secure they actually are. I wanted to build a tool that helps clients reach massive life milestones like purchasing a house by 35 or retiring early at 50 by proving that income does not build financial freedom, cash flow control does.

What it does

The Tangerine Financial Resilience Engine is a diagnostic platform that transforms baseline banking data into proactive financial interventions. By analyzing transaction histories, it flags vulnerabilities and tests accounts against real world shocks such as job loss or unexpected repairs before clients reach negative cash flow.

It actively detects four major financial traps:

The High-Earner: It identifies top earners living paycheck-to-paycheck. (nearly 30% of top earners run a baseline monthly deficit due to lifestyle inflation, and over 67% would have under 6 months of runway if they lost their job).

The Silent Deficit: It flags the 26% of all clients who consistently spend more than they earn, continuously depleting potential investments.

The Inverted Expense Pyramid: It alerts users when lifestyle habits overtake baseline fixed necessities (affecting 1 in 5 clients).

The Big Single Expense: It calculates the risk of a single unexpected bill completely wiping out liquid savings, which currently threatens 4% of accounts.

By halting these silent cash leaks, the engine ensures major life goals remain mathematically achievable:

For Buying a House by 35: It protects the 20% down payment from unchecked daily leaks, preserves borrowing capacity by avoiding credit card debt traps, and ensures buyers have the buffer to survive post-purchase maintenance shocks.

For Retiring at 45 or 55: It enforces the aggressive 35%–70% savings rates required for early retirement, eliminates high-earner fragility, and insulates portfolios against Sequence of Returns Risk so clients don't have to liquidate investments early.

How we built it

We engineered the platform by processing the provided dataset of over 1.06 million transactions across 4,500 Tangerine accounts.

Data Processing & Analytics: We parsed the monthly_summary.csv and transaction logs to calculate exact medians for income, fixed costs, and baseline runways. We categorized the 4,500 accounts into 7 distinct behavioral personas (e.g., Deficit Sprinters, Leveraged Borrowers).

Shock Simulation: We built a dynamic algorithmic model that instantly recalculates a customer's runway based on variable shocks such as replacing income with 55% Employment Insurance (EI) or inflating household bills by 15%.

AI Intervention: To make the data actionable, we integrated an AI coaching layer powered by Gemini that generates personalized, audio-assisted Dual-Action Plans and emergency reserve targets directly for the customer.

Challenges we ran into

The biggest challenge was moving beyond surface-level metrics. It is easy to look at a high account balance and assume the client is financially healthy. Figuring out how to accurately calculate and clean the true baseline deficit separating fixed loan/bill commitments from unclassified spending, requiring deep data organization. Additionally, translating complex algorithmic outputs (such as "Sequence of Returns Risk" or "Inverted Pyramids") into a clean, actionable UI for both bank advisors and everyday customers took several iterations.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We are proud of uncovering the "High-Earner Illusion." Proving that high income clients are often just one paycheck away from a severe debt cycle challenges traditional banking assumptions. We are also proud of our interactive shock simulator, which seamlessly applies real-world economic conditions like EI limits or inflation to predict a client's specific point of failure down to the day.

What we learned

The data taught us a critical reality: lifestyle inflation is the silent killer of wealth. Untracked, daily spending habits quietly destroy long-term wealth, leaving even top earners highly vulnerable. We learned that the banking industry needs to shift from reactive penalties like overdraft fees to proactive contingency planning.

What's next for Financial Resilience Engine

In the future, we want to integrate the engine directly into the Tangerine mobile app via live banking APIs. We plan to expand the AI coaching features to offer time-sensitive push notifications when a user begins to invert their expense pyramid. Ultimately, we want to scale this engine to turn everyday transaction data into resilient, compounding assets for millions of Canadians.
