Inspiration

Attending a school without financial education, it was hard for me to understand how to manage money correctly. This is an issue present in today's society for the young and those who lack the resources to afford programs to teach them financial management. That inspired me to create this app with the intention of bringing awareness and assistance to one aspect of financial management: budgeting.

What it does

The Financial Manager allows users to input daily expenses and displays it visually in a pie chart. The goal of the app is to bring awareness for users of how much of their budget they are spending on certain items, with the intention of encouraging them to improve their spending habits.

How we built it

The application was built using Android Studio and Java. The backend development was done on Java files, while the frontend was created using xml.

Challenges we ran into

Since this was my first time using Android Studios, it was difficult learning the different views and tools used in the application. Although many of the solutions could be found online, a lot of the backend had to be created alone since the combination of online resources couldn't quite get what I envisioned for the project.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

I'm particularly proud of creating the onboarding screen in the beginning and for being able to work around online resources to create a project I liked. Even though there were alternatives I could've done that could be found online, I never jeopardized my vision for the project and continued working.

What we learned

I learned the basics of Android Studio and was introduced to full-stack development of the application. I gained exposure to a variety of tools found in Android Studio such as views, fragments, and containers.

What's next for Financial Manager

The next step is to improve the interface by potentially incorporating a database to allow for user log-in to track progress each time. Also, I hope to add more functions such as the ability to create budgeting categories, set a monthly budget, and much more.
