Inspiration
Our primary inspiration was platforms such as TikTok or Instagram, which are known for their short-form video format.
What it does
Our app utilizes short-form educational videos uploaded by verified financial experts to educate the users based on their current financial journey. It uses data from their CapitalOne profile, if they choose to link it, and analyzes that data to recommend a financial focus and videos that relate to that focus. Additonally, there are features such as saving videos and commenting on videos to further their learning experience.
How we built it
For the backend portion, we utilized platforms such as MongoDB, VSCode, Node.js, and Postman to store various databases that are vital for the application. For the frontend, we utilized Figma to create a prototype and applied it using React Native.
Challenges we ran into
A challenge we ran into was the connection and integration of our backend and frontend. Our application requires multiple databases to be stored (videos, users, saved videos, following, etc.), which required more implementation on the backend portion, which then needed to be conveyed by the frontend. This was a difficult thing to do considering our skill levels as well as the time constraint.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
Something we are proud of would be our Figma Prototype, as we were able to experiment with a platform we were new to, and create a cohesive prototype that matched the aesthetics and functions that we desired to portray. Additionally, we are proud of the amount of implementation we were able to do on the backend portion. Through personal research and studying, our backend team was able to create the vital databases needed to store the most important parts of our project idea.
What we learned
As we worked on this application, we gained a great amount of technical skills that we can apply as we improve this project, as well as on future ventures. A skill we gained was the use of Figma and the tools available to create a functional prototype that represents what functions our application can do. Additionally, we became better versed on platforms such as VSCode, MongoDB, Postman, and more. We also became more efficient in the integration of these platforms into our design on Figma.
What's next for One-Up Finance
Something we hope to work towards as One-Up Finance grows is the verification process of the finance experts. We had the idea of converting expert verification into a web browser extension that verifies other platforms' content, which could then be integrated into our platform to create a wider array of educational content for users to consume. Another idea we had was to further target younger audiences and incorporate a more fun aspect using a feature like accomplishment badges. Inspired by platforms such as Duolingo, we think having badges would be an enticing feature to have users track their progress and motivate them to continue to use the app.
