Financial Life Simulator - Hack the System Project

A gamified approach to democratizing financial literacy and economic education

Inspiration 💡

Our inspiration came from witnessing the stark reality of financial illiteracy in our society. According to the National Financial Educators Council, the average American loses approximately $1,230 annually due to financial illiteracy. We realized that traditional economic education fails to engage people because it's abstract and disconnected from real-life consequences.

The "Hack the System" challenge perfectly aligned with our vision: democratizing economic knowledge through interactive simulation. We wanted to create something that transforms complex financial concepts into tangible, relatable experiences. Our game simulates the butterfly effect of financial decisions - how a choice at age 18 can compound into hundreds of thousands of dollars by retirement.

The inspiration struck when we considered how video games teach complex systems through experiential learning. Why couldn't we apply the same principles to financial education? This led us to develop a life simulation game that makes economic literacy accessible, engaging, and immediately applicable.

What it does 🎮

Our Financial Life Simulator is an interactive web-based game that guides users through critical financial decisions across five life stages (ages 18, 22, 25, 28, and 32). Each decision point presents binary choices with real-world financial implications:

Core Features:

  • 🎓 Education vs. Work (Age 18): College debt vs. immediate income
  • 💼 Career Path (Age 22): Corporate stability vs. startup equity
  • 🏠 Housing Strategy (Age 25): Homeownership vs. rental flexibility
  • 📈 Investment Approach (Age 28): Aggressive growth vs. conservative savings
  • 🚀 Entrepreneurship (Age 32): Business venture vs. career advancement

Advanced Mechanics:

  • Real-time Financial Calculations: Using compound interest formulas: $$A = P(1 + r/n)^{nt}$$ Where A = final amount, P = principal, r = annual interest rate, n = compounding frequency, t = time

  • Dynamic Net Worth Tracking: $$\text{Net Worth} = \text{Assets} - \text{Liabilities}$$ $$\text{Assets} = \text{Cash} + \text{Investments} + \text{Property Value}$$ $$\text{Liabilities} = \text{Student Loans} + \text{Mortgage} + \text{Other Debt}$$

  • Credit Score Impact Modeling: Simulating how decisions affect creditworthiness

  • Behavioral Analytics: Tracking decision-making patterns and hesitation times

  • Comparative Analysis: Users can compare different life paths and outcomes

Educational Impact:

The game transforms abstract concepts like compound interest, opportunity cost, and risk-return tradeoffs into visceral experiences. Users don't just learn about these concepts—they feel their impact through simulated decades of financial consequences.

How we built it 🛠️

Technology Stack:

  • Frontend Framework: React 18 with TypeScript for type-safe development
  • Build Tool: Vite for lightning-fast development and optimized production builds
  • State Management: Zustand for lightweight, scalable state management
  • Styling: Tailwind CSS with custom Minecraft-inspired color palette
  • Animations: Framer Motion for smooth, engaging user interactions
  • Data Visualization: Recharts for financial progress charts and comparisons
  • Icons: Lucide React for consistent, scalable iconography

Architecture Decisions:

1. Modular Component Design

// Example: DecisionPoint component structure
interface DecisionPoint {
  id: string;
  age: number;
  title: string;
  description: string;
  options: DecisionOption[];
}

2. Financial Calculation Engine

We built a comprehensive financial modeling system:

// Compound interest calculation
export const calculateCompoundInterest = (
  principal: number,
  rate: number,
  time: number,
  compoundingFrequency: number = 12
): number => {
  return principal * Math.pow(1 + rate / compoundingFrequency, compoundingFrequency * time);
};

3. State Persistence

Implemented localStorage integration for session persistence, allowing users to continue their financial journey across browser sessions.

4. Responsive Design Philosophy

Mobile-first approach ensuring accessibility across devices, crucial for reaching diverse demographics.

Development Process:

  1. Research Phase: Analyzed real financial data and decision impact studies
  2. Design Phase: Created user journey maps and wireframes
  3. Core Development: Built financial calculation engine and game logic
  4. UI/UX Implementation: Developed engaging, game-like interface
  5. Testing & Refinement: Iterative testing with focus on user engagement
  6. Performance Optimization: Ensured smooth animations and fast load times

Challenges we ran into 🚧

1. Mathematical Accuracy vs. Simplification

Balancing realistic financial modeling with game accessibility was our biggest challenge. Real-world finance involves countless variables, but games require simplified, understandable mechanics.

Solution: We created a "simplified realism" approach—using actual financial formulas but with streamlined variables that maintain educational value without overwhelming complexity.

2. Engagement vs. Education Balance

Making financial education genuinely engaging without sacrificing educational integrity required constant iteration.

Solution: Implemented progressive disclosure—core decisions are simple and visual, with detailed financial breakdowns available for users who want deeper understanding.

3. Cross-Browser Compatibility

Ensuring consistent performance across different browsers and devices, especially with complex animations and calculations.

Solution: Extensive testing and progressive enhancement strategies, with fallbacks for older browsers.

4. State Management Complexity

As the game grew more sophisticated, managing financial state, user decisions, and behavioral analytics became increasingly complex.

Solution: Adopted Zustand for its simplicity and TypeScript integration, creating clear separation of concerns between game state, financial calculations, and user interface.

5. Performance Optimization

Real-time financial calculations and smooth animations required careful performance optimization.

Solution: Implemented memoization for expensive calculations and optimized re-rendering patterns using React's built-in optimization techniques.

Technical Implementation Details

Financial Calculation Engine

Our core financial modeling uses several key formulas:

Compound Interest with Regular Contributions: $$FV = PMT \times \frac{(1 + r)^n - 1}{r} + PV \times (1 + r)^n$$

Where:

  • $FV$ = Future Value
  • $PMT$ = Regular Payment Amount
  • $r$ = Interest Rate per Period
  • $n$ = Number of Periods
  • $PV$ = Present Value

Loan Payment Calculation: $$PMT = PV \times \frac{r(1 + r)^n}{(1 + r)^n - 1}$$

Net Present Value for Investment Decisions: $$NPV = \sum_{t=0}^{n} \frac{CF_t}{(1 + r)^t}$$

Where $CF_t$ is the cash flow at time $t$.

Architecture Philosophy

Our application follows the "Progressive Disclosure" principle—presenting simple interfaces that reveal complexity as needed. This approach ensures accessibility while maintaining educational depth.
