Inspiration
Managing money can feel unpredictable, especially when bills and everyday purchases compete with longer-term goals. As college students, we know how important it is to keep track of spending. We wanted to make it easier to see what’s coming, understand how spending affects a budget, and plan ahead with more confidence.
The weather theme came about spontaneously. It adds a fun, intuitive way to interpret your financial outlook at a glance.
What It Does
Financial Forecast helps users track spending, plan for upcoming bills, and see how payments may affect their balance over time. Users can get advice about hypothetical purchases, save toward multiple future goals, and view upcoming payments on a calendar or in chronological list view.
How We Built It
We built Financial Forecast as a web application with a shared dashboard, calendar, purchase advisor, and goal-planning tools. It uses the Nessie API to access customer and account data, with features for managing planned payments and tracking savings goals. We used GitHub to manage and update the project. We also used integrated coding assistants in VS Code such as Codex and Claude.
Challenges We Ran Into
Keeping balances and forecasts consistent across the dashboard and calendar was challenging. We also had to account for recurring payments, past payments, multiple savings goals, and how upcoming bills affect a user’s financial status.
Accomplishments We’re Proud Of
We brought several planning tools together in one app: users can review bills, explore the impact of a potential purchase, and set aside money toward multiple goals. We’re also proud of the weather-inspired interface, which reflects the user’s financial status in a way that’s easy to understand—and of building something we’d use ourselves.
What We Learned
We learned how important it is to keep financial data consistent across different parts of an app. We also learned that forecasts are more useful when they help users understand the impact of a decision and suggest a practical next step.
What’s Next for Financial Forecast
Next, we’d like to improve personalized guidance, make recurring payments and savings reminders more flexible, and continue refining forecasts so users can better understand how today’s choices affect their upcoming budget.
We’d also like to explore building a mobile app. That could make Financial Forecast more accessible when users are making purchases on the go and help deliver timely notifications.
