Inspiration
Our inspiration for creating a financial adventure game that educates about financial decisions and their significance comes from a desire to simplify the complexities of finance since we noticed many youths taking reckless decisions regarding their money (in our school too). We noticed a lack of accessible financial education and wanted to bridge that gap. Our journey began with a vision to develop an engaging game where players could learn to budget, invest, and make strategic choices in a risk-free setting. Our passion lies in the belief that understanding finances is crucial for everyone to make informed decisions and plan for the future. Through this game, our goal is not just to share knowledge but to build confidence, helping players navigate their financial paths wisely.
What it does
Though our website is just a prototype, it still fulfils some of the financial decisions we wanted to incorporate into our idea. Think of it like a virtual journey through the ups and downs of managing money but without the real-world risk of going broke. The game puts you in the driver's seat of your financial life from a young age all the way to retirement.
You start as a teen making simple, inconsequential financial decisions. Then, as the game progresses, the choices get more complex – dealing with student loans, budgeting for rent, handling credit cards, and even navigating the stock market.
Each decision you make impacts your financial health and leads to different outcomes. We've thrown in a mix of scenarios – some based on our own experiences, others just random stuff we thought would be interesting. The cool part? You get to see the long-term effects of your financial choices, something like a sneak peek into your potential financial future. It’s like learning to swim in a pool before jumping into the ocean. We wanted to make learning about money management less of a snooze-fest and more of an adventure.
How we built it
So, building 'Financial Adventure' was a wild ride. We started with the idea of making financial literacy fun and accessible – something we felt was missing in our own education. We used HTML, CSS, and JavaScript to bring this game to life. The design process was a mix of brainstorming sessions – often during our hangouts – and a lot of trial and error, especially with the CSS to make it look cool but not too over-the-top. The most fun part was coming up with real-life scenarios for the game, which we did by reflecting on our own experiences and what we heard around us
Challenges we ran into
First, getting the game logic right was tricky. We wanted to make sure the decisions in the game had realistic consequences. Then there was the struggle with making the interface user-friendly. Secondly, balancing this project with schoolwork and our other random hobbies was tough, especially with very little time left!
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We managed to create a game that's not only fun but also teaches important financial skills! The feedback from our initial testers, mostly friends and family, has been really encouraging. They actually learned something, which is awesome!
What we learned
We learned a ton! First up, teamwork. We had to constantly communicate and align our ideas. Then, the technical skills – like advanced CSS tricks and JavaScript functions. But beyond that, we learned a lot about financial literacy ourselves while researching and building the game. It’s kind of cool teaching yourself something while creating a tool to teach others
What's Next for Financial Adventure
We want to take 'Financial Adventure' to the next level. We’re thinking of adding more scenarios, maybe even personalized paths based on initial choices. We were also thinking of incorporating a stock simulation for investing which can greatly enhance the student's desire to invest but also to do it safely, which helps them in the future and it's planning
