Inspiration
This project is inspired by the great differences in financial knowledge and resources between communities. Financial literacy and access to resources are sometimes fully exclusive rather than inclusive, leaving out those who really need it. In this manner, we knew we were up for creating forward-thinking financial technology that would promote equality and financial empowerment for one and all.
What it does
Web App Financial Access for All-empower underserved communities through personalized financial resources, budgeting tools, educational modules, and local community supports. It collects a minimal user profile and, with that, tailors relevant financial programs, grants, and educational material to each individual's needs. Basic budgeting and goal-tracking tools are available to users to keep them abreast of their financial goals. Regarding educational modules, highly relevant topics covered include budgeting, credit management, and saving. The app has a program finder where users connect with local financial aid programs, free counseling services, and community resources. Financial Access for All is designed to be inclusive; therefore, text-to-speech capabilities and an intuitive user interface guide any user, regardless of their background or ability, through meaningful steps toward financial empowerment.
How we built it
We developed Financial Access for All as an accessible and user-friendly web app using both front-end and back-end technologies. HTML, CSS, and JavaScript at the frontend were implemented with the React framework to provide a responsive and intuitive user interface. This allows users to navigate seamlessly within the app, whether they are using desktops or mobile devices. Backbone.js on Node.js, MongoDB for database storage of user profiles, recommendations and local resources. We designed an informative, relevantly packed application for learning about basic financial topics: budgeting, credit, and savings. These topics are organized into easy-to-navigate modules. Location-based services were enabled through API integrations that connect users with local community programs and financial aid services. We include in this application text-to-speech, multilingual features, and adjustable layouts to make the application more user-friendly for people with different characteristics. This is achieved by iteratively developing a financial tool inclusively to support and empower users of all walks of life.
Challenges we ran into
One of the big challenges was our lack of knowledge in coding, which restricted us from introducing into this app all those features that were programmed in our minds. The lack of that understanding obstructed the way of translating ideas into functional code; thus, seeking additional resources and support was required. Also, working with the complications around diverse technologies and ensuring access for everyone presented further obstacles in our way, but proved to be a great learning curve.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We are proud of several key successes for our "Financial Access for All" web application project: first, identifying a critical need in financial resources within underserved communities and providing a comprehensive app concept to help fix the problem. We outlined a range of features, including personalized financial resources, budgeting tools, educational modules, and a searchable database of local community programs focused on increasing financial literacy and access. Our team prioritized accessibility by the user through designing our app to handle multilingual support, visual aids, and intuitive interface design so it would be beneficial to a variety of backgrounds and abilities. We also performed well as an effective team in sharing knowledge and skills related to the challenge and provided opportunities for a supportive learning environment. Design: Even though this is a challenge for us because we aren't that skilled artistically, we have gathered inspiration and resources in learning how to do good design. This led us to create a detailed prototype outline that depicted the fact that we were able to turn ideas into forms and prove our commitment to equality in finance, contribution to the community.
What we learned
In the process of this "Financial Access for All" web development, we gathered knowledge that will come in handy in our next projects. We know that there has to be substantial research so that the real needs of the community are realized and solutions offered to effectively meet those needs. Working in a team was helpful to us since we acquired the skill of leveraging each other's strengths and recognized opportunities for improvement, such as in coding and design. We also learned from user-centered design principles that taught us to embed accessibility and inclusivity from the very beginning. Secondly, overcoming technical hurdles has had a positive result on our problem-solving skills, stretching us to find resources and learn skills that we did not know how to do at the beginning. Generally speaking, this experience broadened our knowledge with respect to financial literacy and community support and contributed to personal growth and teamwork.
What's next for Financial Access for All
The following steps as to how to develop the "Financial Access for All" web app will involve several stages: we are going to refine our prototype into a model, capturing user feedback so that features can effectively deliver along the lines of expectation of our target audience. The next step is to plan a technology stack that would be efficient for storing and managing the users' data and resources using a backend platform. Furthermore, we will create interactive educational modules to help users gain practical knowledge of finances in an easy and relatable manner. Second, we will continue seeking partnerships with local community organizations to facilitate an enriched database of resources and programs, making those resources available to the users. Moving forward, we will continue to promote financial literacy and inclusion, ensuring that this very important app launch makes a difference in underserved communities.
