Inspiration

Managing personal finances often means juggling multiple websites, subscription services, or insecure web spreadsheets. Most existing financial applications require online accounts that compromise personal data privacy or lock advanced analytics behind paywalls.

We wanted to build FinanceOS—a privacy-first, lightning-fast desktop command center that puts 100% control back into the user's hands. Designed as a unified operating system for personal wealth, it combines deep calculation engines with real-time visual analytics completely offline.

What it does

FinanceOS serves as an all-in-one financial intelligence hub:

  • Comprehensive Tracking: Manage income, daily expenses, recurring bills, and subscription renewals in one central dashboard.
  • Investment Portfolio Management: Keep real-time visual track of SIPs, Mutual Funds, and Stocks.
  • Debt & Account Auditing: Monitor bank accounts, credit card utilization, and active loans.
  • Visual Analytics Engine: Real-time interactive charts powered by high-precision calculation logic:
    • Cash Flow trends
    • Expense breakdowns by category (Housing, Food, Healthcare, Transport, Utilities, etc.)
    • Savings rate and Net Worth trajectory month-over-month
  • Financial Planning & Tools: Integrated goal tracking, budgeting rules, embedded financial calculators, and a secure document vault.

How we built it

FinanceOS was built using modern desktop and web architecture for maximum speed and security:

  • Core Desktop Framework: Electron.js to deliver a high-performance cross-platform application.
  • UI & Frontend Stack: Built with Vite and TypeScript for crisp UI responsiveness, modular architecture, and instant state rendering.
  • Database & Persistence: Prisma ORM integrated locally to manage local database queries seamlessly without relying on third-party cloud servers.
  • AI Assistance: Leveraged OpenCode AI during development to streamline complex utility logic and UI component styling.

Challenges we ran into

  • Local Database Integration in Desktop Environment: Wire-framing Prisma ORM within an Electron and Vite desktop pipeline required careful IPC (Inter-Process Communication) management to guarantee low-latency database reads and writes.
  • Data Visualization Performance: Rendering multiple dynamic charts (Cash Flow, Expense Donut, Savings Bars) simultaneously without triggering frame drops or memory leaks in Electron.
  • UX Precision: Organizing dense financial data (investments, loans, budgets, net worth) into an intuitive, distraction-free dark UI without cluttering the screen.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

  • 100% Offline & Private: Zero financial data leaves the user's local machine.
  • Sleek Desktop Experience: Delivered a polished, modern dashboard UI with real-time percentage indicators and dynamic color-coded financial metrics.
  • Full Financial Ecosystem: Successfully unified daily cash flow tracking with long-term investment planning under a single interface.

What we learned

  • Mastering complex state management and database IPC bridges inside Electron applications.
  • Optimizing TypeScript component workflows with Vite for fast compilation during desktop app distribution.
  • Designing human-centered financial UI dashboards that transform raw numeric data into actionable insights.

  • Data Import/Export: One-click CSV and JSON backup/restore for seamless device migration.
  • Automated Alert System: Desktop notifications for upcoming bill due dates and subscription renewals.
  • Advanced Investment Forecasting: Monte Carlo simulations and compound interest projections for long-term financial independence planning.
