Inspiration

FinanceGPT was born from a simple observation by tech investor Jason Calacanis, who tweeted:

"Is there an LLM version of yahoo finance? 'Tell me all the companies with over $10b in revenue and a 10% growth rate and sort them by P/E ratio'"

This tweet perfectly captured a pain point that millions of investors face daily: financial data is abundant but remains locked behind complex interfaces and specialized jargon. While platforms like Bloomberg Terminal offer powerful capabilities, they come with steep learning curves and even steeper price tags ($24,000/year). Meanwhile, consumer-focused tools like Yahoo Finance require multiple clicks, filters, and manual analysis to extract meaningful insights.

We saw an opportunity to democratize financial intelligence by creating a conversational interface to market data—bringing institutional-grade analysis to everyone through the power of AI and natural language.

What We Built

FinanceGPT is a conversational financial analysis platform that allows users to:

  1. Query financial data using natural language - Ask questions like "Show me tech stocks with P/E ratios under 20 and dividend yields over 2%" and get instant results
  2. Interact via voice - Using ElevenLabs' voice AI technology, users can speak their queries and receive spoken summaries of financial insights
  3. Visualize complex financial data - Results are presented with interactive charts and tables that make understanding market trends intuitive
  4. Track portfolios conversationally - Simply say "Add 10 shares of Apple at yesterday's closing price" and the portfolio updates automatically
  5. Access tiered insights - Our RevenueCat integration enables a seamless freemium model, with deeper insights available to subscribers

The interface combines the power of Bloomberg with the simplicity of ChatGPT, making sophisticated financial analysis accessible to everyone from novice investors to financial professionals.

How We Built It

We built FinanceGPT entirely using Bolt.new, leveraging its AI-powered development capabilities to rapidly prototype and refine our application. The development process involved:

  1. Initial Concept Generation: We started with a detailed prompt describing our vision for a conversational financial platform, which Bolt.new transformed into a working prototype

  2. Core Interface Development: We refined the conversational UI to handle complex financial queries and display results in an intuitive format

  3. Voice Integration: We implemented ElevenLabs' voice technology to enable hands-free operation—perfect for busy investors checking markets on the go

  4. Data Visualization: We created interactive charts and data tables that automatically generate based on query results

  5. Subscription Model: We integrated RevenueCat to implement our tiered pricing model, providing a sustainable revenue stream while keeping basic features accessible

  6. Deployment: We configured the application for seamless deployment on Netlify, ensuring reliable performance and scalability

Challenges We Faced

Building FinanceGPT wasn't without its hurdles:

1. Natural Language Complexity

Financial queries can be incredibly nuanced. Translating questions like "Which tech companies have beaten earnings estimates for the last 3 quarters but are still trading below their 52-week high?" into structured API calls required significant prompt engineering and testing.

2. Data Integration

Financial data comes from multiple sources with varying formats and update frequencies. We had to implement a robust caching and integration layer to ensure accurate, timely information without hitting API rate limits.

3. Voice Interface Precision

Financial terminology includes many similar-sounding terms and ticker symbols. We implemented confirmation mechanisms and context-aware processing to ensure voice queries were interpreted correctly every time.

4. Finding the Right Balance

We wanted to make financial data accessible without oversimplifying it. Striking the right balance between depth and approachability required multiple iterations of the user interface and extensive testing with users of varying financial literacy.

What We Learned

This project taught us several valuable lessons:

  1. AI-Powered Development: Using Bolt.new transformed our development process, allowing us to iterate rapidly and focus on solving core problems rather than writing boilerplate code

  2. Voice UX Design: Creating effective voice interactions requires a different mindset than traditional GUI design—context and confirmation become even more critical

  3. Financial Data Complexity: Working with financial data revealed the challenges of real-time integration, normalization across sources, and presenting complex metrics in an accessible way

  4. Subscription Model Optimization: Implementing RevenueCat helped us understand how to structure freemium offerings to maximize both accessibility and revenue potential

What's Next for FinanceGPT

We're just getting started! Our roadmap includes:

  • Expanding data sources to include private company information and alternative data
  • Adding portfolio optimization suggestions based on risk tolerance and goals
  • Implementing social features to compare strategies with other investors
  • Developing custom alerts for price movements, earnings events, and market anomalies
  • Creating an API for integration with existing financial platforms

FinanceGPT represents our vision for the future of financial intelligence—where powerful market insights are just a conversation away.
