Inspiration
We as aspirations of life and students of science, particularly computer science, all struggle from one particular struggle, a struggle we all share no matter our background, race, culture, upbringing or any other factor, and that is money. Money usually breaks people up, causes stress and problems but this time, the tables have turned; we used the one common enemy to unite us to merge our studies and knowledge to create a financial literacy website, where our target audience is specifically students; however, can be used by all. We decided to create a website, instead of a software/application as then it will be accessible by all with ease. Our one goal, as a group, was to help others and bring our vision to life.
What it does
This app has a built in time value of money calculator in it to help individuals with investing. It also allows users to book sessions with financial advisors and enroll in financial literacy courses of multiple topics such as investing, mortgages, and insurance. Lastly, the app allows individuals to add their monthly transactions to see their expense breakdown visually.
How we built it
We built this project using a sql database as the base for our website which consisted of HTML, CSS, JavaScript and PHP.
Challenges we ran into
The biggest challenge we faced was the time limit, we had to make realistic goals that could be finished in 24 hours. Throughout this hackathon we had to quickly shift priorities of what could be accomplished which was very stressful, but also allowed our project to develop and evolve further. We were working with new languages and the learning curve was challenging in only 24 hours. Some of us also did not have much financial knowledge, so we had to educate ourselves on what is important for the industry.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
Our biggest accomplishment is completing an immense project such as this in the mere 24 hours we were given. Furthermore, combining everything into a completed project despite everyone’s different strengths and weaknesses is something we are very proud of. Lastly, other than the coding aspects, we also had to educate ourselves about finance, so it feels good knowing we learned something about another important subject in our lives.
What we learned
While creating our project, we realized how complicated financial management can be. We realized why people struggle with financial management and the importance of simplifying the entire process. We also learnt more about our skills under pressure and we developed new skills along the way.
What's next for Finance My Life
No matter the tight time constraints that we face or the challenges faced with learning new languages, we are extremely proud to be able to build an immensely strong foundation that allows us to further enhance our website and be able to implement more and more financial literacy capabilities. Now all that is required is time.
