Inspiration
As digital banking and finance tools become more advanced, many senior citizens find themselves overwhelmed by technology while trying to manage their finances. Finance Buddy was inspired by the need to make financial literacy and digital tools more accessible, empowering older adults to feel confident, independent, and secure in managing their money.
What it does
Finance Buddy is a personal finance assistant tailored for senior citizens. It features:
- A friendly chatbot that simplifies complex financial terms.
- Visual insights into spending and savings trends.
- Alerts and reminders to keep track of bills, pensions, and investments.
- A safe investment simulator with educational resources.
- A clean, user-friendly design ideal for individuals who are less tech-savvy.
How we built it
I built Finance Buddy using Streamlit for the frontend, incorporating Python-based logic for visualizations and simulations. The chatbot was developed using simple NLP tools, and all features were organized into intuitive tabs, keeping accessibility and readability in mind. I also integrated real-world financial data examples to simulate realistic scenarios.
Challenges we ran into
One major challenge was designing a UI that’s clean, non-intimidating, and functional for senior users—balancing simplicity with effectiveness. Additionally, ensuring the chatbot remained helpful without overwhelming the user with jargon took some fine-tuning of its prompts and flow.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
I’m proud of having built this project solo from end to end, with a clear user-first focus. Creating a working prototype that demystifies personal finance for seniors felt especially rewarding. The feedback I received from testers—especially older adults—was incredibly motivating.
What we learned
This project deepened my understanding of accessibility in tech, especially the importance of visual clarity and gentle guidance in UI/UX for older users. I also learned how crucial it is to combine technical functionality with emotional intelligence when designing for a specific, often underserved, demographic.
What's next for Finance Buddy
I’d like to add voice interaction for hands-free assistance, integrate live bank data securely, and expand the chatbot to support multilingual queries. Collaborating with senior organizations or financial literacy nonprofits is also a future goal to pilot the tool with real users.
