What Inspired Me As a boarding school student, I’ve faced the pressure and stress that comes with preparing for exams, especially in the final hours before the test. I realized that while many apps help plan study schedules, none really focused on how to stay calm and manage emotions during that critical last day. I wanted to create something that guides students through those final hours with small, manageable steps to reduce anxiety, avoid burnout, and boost confidence.
What I Learned How important it is to design with empathy — building something that truly supports students emotionally, not just technically.
That the simplest ideas, when focused on real feelings like stress and calm, can have the biggest impact.
The challenge and reward of turning a big, overwhelming problem (exam anxiety) into small, actionable steps.
How valuable user feedback can be, even informal — hearing from friends helped shape the app to be more useful and comforting.
The balance between creating features and keeping the experience clean and non-intimidating is crucial for real adoption.
How I Built It I built Final Stretch as a lightweight web app that divides the last 24 hours before an exam into clear time blocks: review sessions, breaks, wind-down periods, and morning preparation. Each block offers specific, easy-to-follow activities with encouragements to help reduce stress. I focused on a clean, calming design to create a relaxed atmosphere. The app works offline once loaded, knowing that students might not always have internet access.
Challenges I Faced Balancing simplicity and usefulness was tricky. I wanted to avoid overwhelming users with too many tasks, so I had to carefully design the activities to feel manageable and supportive. Also, making the timer and offline features work smoothly required some trial and error. But overcoming these challenges helped me create a tool I believe students will actually want to use.
