Inspiration

Our inspiration for this project stemmed from our collective love for the movie industry, and it's complex web of filming locations that are, sometimes, closer to home than you think.

What it does

Our website has both an informative and playful feel to it. It starts by encouraging you to enter any location into a search box on the home page, which redirects you to a separate page that displays said location on a Google map, and lists out the top five closest, most-famous, film spots near you.

Once you have entered all of the locations that you possibly desire, you have the option to either navigate back to the home page, or to a separate page that tests your knowledge on famous film quotes, accompanied by a Google street view of the location you are prompted to guess.

How we built it

We ran our website off of a Flask server, which directs the user to each of our HTML pages, stylized by classic external and inline CSS. Our HTML pages are integrated with corresponding JavaScript files, which primarily integrate the Google Maps API and allow for a more customized user functionality. To deploy, we used Heroku to host, and we registered our domain name "moviesacrossthe.us" (movies across the US) on GoDaddy.

Challenges we ran into

We found integrating the Google Maps API to be the most difficult, because none of us had ever used it in the past.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We are all proud of our successful use of Github and being able to smoothly contribute to our project at the same time with minimal issues. Using GitHub also allowed us to collaborate easily and allowed us to be able to each focus on our strengths - whether that was in designing in illustator, or coding the frontend, or designing the backend.

We are also proud of creating a complex web app that functions as we had originally envisioned it to.

What we learned

We learned the concept of integrating Google Maps APIs in JavaScript files, how to successfully navigate and implement Github without merge conflicts or major push/pull issues.

We also learned how to be successful with JavaScript and linking said files to HTML pages.

What's next for Film Footprints

The next thing that we envision for our website is to create a SQL database that stores information for a game leaderboard. We also plan to add to the data we collected for famous film spots to give the user as many interesting places as possible.
