Inspiration

Many aspiring developers learn programming concepts and solve coding problems but struggle to understand what skills they still need to become job-ready. They often find it difficult to connect their current abilities with the requirements of their desired software development roles. We built Filler to bridge this gap by helping developers identify missing skills, understand their weaknesses, and find a practical path toward improvement.

What it does

Filler — AI-Powered Developer Skill Gap Analyzer helps aspiring developers understand how their current skills align with their target software development role. It analyzes available coding and GitHub repository evidence to identify potential skill gaps, provides personalized learning recommendations, and suggests practical projects to strengthen those skills. The goal is to help developers move beyond simply learning concepts and start building demonstrable skills and a stronger portfolio.

How we built it

We built Filler with a web-based frontend and a Node.js/Express backend. We integrated Firebase Authentication for user sign-in and Firestore for data storage, along with the Gemini API to support AI-powered features. GitHub repository analysis provides additional evidence of a developer's practical work. The application combines skill assessment, gap identification, learning recommendations, and project-based improvement in one workflow.

Challenges we ran into

One of our main challenges was connecting the frontend, backend, AI integration, Firebase services, and GitHub analysis into a cohesive application. We also faced deployment challenges involving production builds, server port configuration, environment variables, and Firebase authentication on the deployed domain. Another important challenge was designing recommendations that are relevant to a developer's goals rather than providing generic learning advice.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We are proud to turn a common problem faced by aspiring developers into a practical tool that connects skill assessment with actionable improvement. Filler brings together role-based skill analysis, repository evidence, AI-powered guidance, learning recommendations, and project suggestions. We are especially proud of building a working application that aims to help learners understand not only what they should learn, but also how to demonstrate their skills through practical work.

What we learned

Building Filler taught us how different parts of a full-stack application work together, including frontend development, API integration, authentication, database operations, AI integration, and deployment. We also learned that useful AI applications require more than generating responses: they need relevant context, structured workflows, and recommendations that users can act on. Most importantly, we learned to approach development from the user's perspective and focus on solving a real problem.

What's next for Filler — AI-Powered Developer Skill Gap Analyzer

We plan to improve the accuracy of skill-gap analysis, expand support for different software development roles, and make learning recommendations more personalized. Future improvements could include deeper GitHub analysis, coding-platform integrations, progress tracking, reassessments, and portfolio-building guidance. Our long-term vision is to make Filler a continuous development companion that helps aspiring developers identify their next steps, build practical experience, and demonstrate their readiness for real-world opportunities.
