Inspiration

Learning software development can feel overwhelming. There are countless technologies to learn, courses to complete, and projects to build. It can be difficult to figure out which skills are actually important for a particular career and what to focus on next.

I created Filler -AI-Powered Developer Skill Gap Analyzer to help aspiring developers overcome this problem. Instead of endlessly collecting courses and tutorials, we wanted to build a tool that helps developers understand their skill gaps, identify areas for improvement, and take practical steps toward their career goals.

What it does

Filler helps aspiring developers identify the skills they need to improve based on their target software development role. It brings skill assessment, practical evidence, and personalized learning recommendations together in one place.

The platform focuses on identifying skill gaps, evaluating coding and project evidence, recommending relevant learning resources, and encouraging users to apply their knowledge through practical projects. It also aims to help developers track their progress and continuously improve their skills and portfolios.

The main idea behind Filler is to bridge the gap between learning a skill and demonstrating it through real-world applications.

How we built it

Filler is built as a web application that combines frontend and backend technologies with cloud services and AI-powered recommendations.

The frontend uses HTML, CSS, JavaScript, and Vite to provide the user interface. The backend uses Node.js and Express.js to handle application logic and API requests. Firebase provides authentication and cloud data storage, while Google's Gemini API supports AI-powered analysis and learning recommendations. GitHub integration helps analyze repository information and connect a developer's skills with their practical work.

We separated the frontend and backend to keep the application organized and maintainable. This structure allows the frontend to focus on the user experience while the backend manages application logic, data processing, and communication with external services.

Challenges we ran into

One of my biggest challenges was turning the broad concept of developer skill assessment into a practical tool that provides meaningful guidance rather than functioning as another generic AI chatbot.

I also had to consider how to tailor recommendations to different career goals and how to connect a developer's claimed skills with evidence from their coding activity and projects. Integrating multiple services introduced additional challenges involving API communication, authentication, data management, and the secure handling of sensitive credentials.

Another important consideration was presenting the results clearly so that users could understand their weaknesses and decide what to work on next.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

I am proud of developing Filler around a problem that many aspiring developers face: knowing what to learn is often just as difficult as learning it.

The project brings together skill assessment, practical project evidence, and learning recommendations to create a more structured approach to career preparation. Rather than simply listing technologies that developers should learn, Filler focuses on helping them identify areas for improvement and find ways to apply their knowledge.

Building this project also gave me valuable experience in full-stack web development, cloud services, API integration, and applying AI to a practical problem.

What we learned

Through building Filler, we learned that creating a useful AI-powered application involves much more than connecting an AI model to a frontend. It requires careful planning, a clear understanding of the problem, well-structured application logic, reliable integrations, and a user experience that makes the results easy to understand.

I also learned the importance of handling data responsibly and designing recommendations that users can turn into practical actions.

Most importantly, this project helped us understand that learning software development is an ongoing process. Identifying skill gaps, practising new concepts, building projects, and evaluating progress are all important parts of becoming a better developer.

What's next for Filler - AI-Powered Developer Skill Gap Analyzer

My goal is to make Filler more accurate, personalized, and useful at every stage of a developer's learning journey.

I plan to expand the range of supported career roles, improve the analysis of coding and project evidence, develop more structured learning roadmaps, and connect users with relevant learning resources. I also want to strengthen progress tracking and introduce reassessments that help developers understand how their skills improve over time.

Ultimately, I want Filler to help developers move beyond wondering "what I should learn next?" and start building the skills and projects they need to demonstrate their abilities.
