Inspiration

We got the inspiration from https://filecoin.energy/ and realised that we're able to cover the gaps and offer a more complete solution.

What it does

FilGreen offers in-depth information on how green is Filecoin and exposes data that help identify the countries, storage entities and storage providers that need to improve their green energy percentage.

Data such as Network raw power, Energy consumption rate, Emissions and Renewable energy ratio is aggregated by continents and displayed in individual charts.

The interactive chart allows users to get an overview on Emissions, Emissions intensity, Cumulative energy use, Cumulative RECs purchases and Renewable energy ratio. It also enables to visualise the metrics for a specific storage provider, entity or country or to compare the data of two different storage providers, entities or countries.

The table splits the collected data into 3 categories (Storage Providers, Entities and Countries) and displays information regarding their:

  • Raw power (PiB)
  • Cummulative energy use (MWh)
  • Cummulative REC purchases (MWh)
  • Renewable energy %
  • Emissions (tCO2)
  • Emissions intensity (tCO2/PiB)

A storage entity can be defined by an user that logins to his account and claims the storage providers based on a Lotus proof. The proof is a Lotus command that the user has to run locally on the claimed storage provider's machine and paste the result in FilGreen's dedicated form.

How we built it

FilGreen has 2 modules:

1. Analytics module

The Analytics module enables users to:

  • view the region-based distribution of Network raw power, Energy consumption rate, Emissions and Renewable energy ratio (%) over a chosen period of time

  • interact with an insightful chart that shows data regarding the Renewable energy ratio, Emissions, Emissions intensity, Cumulative energy use and Cumulative RECs purchases over a chosen period of time. The interactive chart enables an user to:

    • get a global overview with a detailed section
    • search for a country, entity or SP and visualize the charts and specific metrics in the detailed section
    • compare 2 countries, entities or SPs and vizualize the charts for both of them together and specific comparison data in the detailed section
  • analyze the table's data that stores information on Storage Providers, Entities and Countries such as:

    • Raw power (PiB)
    • Cumulative energy use (MWh)
    • Cumulative REC purchases (MWh)
    • Renewable energy ratio (%)
    • Emissions (tCO2)
    • Emissions intensity (tCO2/PiB)
    • each column of the table can be sorted or filtered based on its content. The table's data can be exported to a CSV file.

2. Storage Entity module

The Storage Entity module enables an entity signup, login and add its storage providers based on a Lotus proof. The proof is a Lotus command that the user has to run locally on the claimed storage provider's machine and paste the result in FilGreen's dedicated form.

Challenges we ran into

Our biggest challenge is to make sure the proof veryfing algorithm is compatible with the latest Lotus version.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We successfully released other tools on Filecoin such as https://filmarket.io/ and https://filpulse.io/

What we learned

We learned how to measure the environmental impacts of Filecoin and how to identify the countries, storage entities and storage providers that need to improve their green energy percentage.

What's next for FilGreen

We'll go from FilGreen incentives to FilGreen development and then public release it on https://filgreen.app/
