Inspiration

As a 3D printing hobbyist, I kept losing track of which filament spools I actually owned — buying duplicates I didn’t need, or running out of a color mid-print without realizing I was low. Existing tools often felt too complex, built more for print farms than casual makers. I wanted something small, fast, and genuinely nice to look at.

What it does

FilaTrack is a lightweight iOS app for managing a 3D printing filament collection. It tracks brand, material, color, purchase history, storage location, and remaining weight — so you know what’s on your shelf before buying more or starting a print.

Each spool is also represented visually in 3D. As you update its remaining weight, the filament on the spool changes with it, making inventory easier to understand at a glance.

To make adding new filament faster, FilaTrack can scan spool labels with the camera and extract information such as brand, material, and color instead of requiring everything to be entered manually.

How we built it

FilaTrack is built natively with SwiftUI. I designed the product and UI and developed it with Claude Code as a development assistant.

A major focus was making inventory feel visual rather than spreadsheet-like, including interactive 3D spool representations that respond to remaining filament weight and camera-based label scanning to reduce manual entry.

RevenueCat powers FilaTrack Pro, a one-time lifetime unlock, handling purchase state, entitlements, and restoration across the app.

Challenges we ran into

Getting RevenueCat integrated correctly with StoreKit and making sure the entire purchase flow worked reliably end-to-end took some iteration.

As a solo indie maker coming from a design background, this was my first time implementing in-app purchases in a native iOS app. I also had to figure out how to turn something inherently data-heavy — filament inventory — into an interface that stayed lightweight and visual instead of becoming another spreadsheet.

Accomplishments that we’re proud of

I took FilaTrack from an idea to a polished, fully functional iOS app as a solo maker and shipped it on the App Store within the Ship-a-ton window.

Along the way, I built a working lifetime Pro unlock powered by RevenueCat, interactive 3D spool visualization, storage and spending tracking, inventory insights, and camera-based label scanning — while keeping the app intentionally small and focused.

What we learned

I learned how to structure an in-app purchase system around entitlements rather than individual transactions, and how RevenueCat simplifies purchase-state management, restoration, and access control.

More broadly, building FilaTrack taught me that even a utility app can benefit from strong visual feedback. Showing a spool physically becoming emptier turned a simple number into something much easier to understand at a glance.

What’s next for FilaTrack

Next, I want to make adding and maintaining a filament collection even faster, while keeping FilaTrack independent of any particular printer ecosystem.

Japanese localization and more detailed inventory and spending insights are also planned, along with continued improvements based on feedback from 3D printing hobbyists.
