Inspiration

Most personal finance apps are excellent at recording transactions and visualizing spending. However, they rarely answer the question that matters most:

"What does my financial behavior actually mean?"

I wanted to build a platform that helps people develop financial awareness before making financial decisions.

Instead of recommending financial products or selling investments, FiJo focuses on helping users understand their financial condition through transparent, rule-based financial intelligence.

Our philosophy is simple:

Financial awareness before financial advice.

What it does

FiJo is a Financial Intelligence Platform that transforms everyday financial transactions into meaningful financial insights.

Rather than only tracking income and expenses, FiJo helps users understand:

  • Their current Financial Health Score
  • Their Wealth Stage
  • Their financial strengths and weaknesses
  • Their next financial milestone
  • Practical actions they can take to improve their financial habits

Unlike many financial platforms, FiJo does not sell financial products, recommend investment products, or monetize users' financial data.

To ensure consistent financial analysis, every transaction is mapped into a Canonical Financial Catalog, allowing the platform to understand the financial meaning behind spending instead of relying on free-text categories.

FiJo also introduces Community Intelligence, which provides users with broader financial context through anonymized and aggregated community trends.

The purpose is not to compare wealth between individuals, but to help users understand whether changes in their spending reflect their own habits or broader economic conditions.

This creates financial awareness before users seek financial advice elsewhere.

How we built it

We built FiJo using:

  • Next.js 15
  • React
  • TypeScript
  • Tailwind CSS
  • shadcn/ui
  • Supabase
  • PostgreSQL

The application is built around four core layers:

  1. Transaction Management
  2. Canonical Financial Catalog
  3. Financial Knowledge Engine
  4. Rule-Based Financial Intelligence

GPT-5.6 was used throughout the project to design the product vision, information architecture, financial intelligence model, sprint planning, and technical architecture.

Codex was used as the implementation partner, generating production-ready code, integrating new modules, refactoring components, and implementing the application through multiple iterative development sprints.

Challenges we ran into

The biggest challenge was avoiding the temptation to build "just another expense tracker."

As the project evolved, we realized that meaningful financial intelligence requires a completely different architecture.

Instead of storing arbitrary categories, we designed a Canonical Financial Catalog and a Financial Knowledge Engine so every transaction has consistent financial meaning.

Designing this foundation required multiple iterations, but it creates a scalable architecture for future financial intelligence features.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We're proud that FiJo goes beyond recording financial data.

During this hackathon we successfully built:

  • A Financial Intelligence Dashboard
  • Rule-Based Financial Health Scoring
  • Wealth Stage assessment
  • Personalized financial guidance based on financial condition
  • Canonical Financial Catalog
  • Financial Knowledge Engine
  • Community Intelligence foundation

Most importantly, we established an architecture that allows financial insights to be generated transparently using deterministic rules instead of opaque AI decisions.

What we learned

This project taught us that building financial intelligence is much more about designing the right data model than building dashboards.

We also learned how GPT-5.6 and Codex complement each other.

GPT-5.6 was invaluable for product thinking, architecture, and implementation planning, while Codex significantly accelerated software development by handling iterative implementation and refactoring.

Together they enabled us to spend more time improving product quality instead of repetitive coding tasks.

What's next for FiJo

Our long-term vision is to make FiJo a trusted platform for financial awareness.

Future development includes:

  • Market Intelligence for essential goods
  • Community spending benchmarks
  • Smarter financial milestones
  • Financial journey tracking
  • Personalized financial guidance based on financial progress
  • Privacy-first financial analytics

Throughout its evolution, FiJo will continue to follow one principle:

Financial awareness before financial advice.
