Inspiration

With the current economical crisis that is going on in our country, and the growing amount of homelessness and poverty, some individuals go days without getting a proper meal while some households, restaurants and shops have excessive amounts of unused food resulting in 10.7 million tonnes of food being wasted every year. My app aims to tackle this by enabling users to list their unwanted food for free and allow others in the area to collect it, helping to reduce food waste and fight hunger.

What it does

My food redistribution app will let users list food for donation to be claimed by foodbanks, shelters and individuals which will affect anyone who cannot afford to buy food or individuals with spare food they don’t want to waste. It allows people to see nearby food that would otherwise go to waste and claim it before it expires.

How I built it

I built the interactive prototype using Figma with the 4 main pages easily accessible on the bottom tab bar; these included the home page, food listing, my donations and notifications. I also built in a profile tab on the header, allowing users to view and edit their personal information, see their favourited items and impact statistics, adjust their settings, and find help. The home screen features nearby items categorised into newest, distance and expiry so users can quickly and see what new items are available near them and tailor it to see what's closest and what needs to be used urgently. It also shows an impact summary showing how many total donations that users have made so far, how many lives they have affected (people they have donated to), and the total days of donating. This is so users can see the impact they've had on their community and come away feeling proud and positive after seeing real-life statistics. The food listing page expands on the nearby locations and shows all items in the same categories for users to browse through, also allowing users to see the listings on an interactive map so they can visually see where each item is. The my donations page allows users to manage their listings, create a new listing and see and manage their favourited items. The app features real time notifications so users can stay updated on their activity and others nearby to them.

Challenges I ran into

After testing the first round of prototyping on users, we found they had a desire to message sellers to confirm pick-up times and ask any questions and without being able to do this it left the users confused and frustrated as there was no way to co-ordinate that. So to resolve this issue, in the header bar, we implemented an instant messaging feature where you can find businesses and individuals on the app, send direct messages to them and view their profile (including contact information and listings). On each item listing, there is also the option to message the seller directly so you do not have to leave the listing page and manually scroll through the users to find the right one. This saves users time and allows direct contact easily with each seller to avoid any confusion and create a more seamless user journey.

What's next for FightHunger

In future developments, we would introduce a smarter listing page and booking system - allowing sellers to show their availability and users to book at a pickup time when confirming the item. In the settings, we'll enable accessibility features such as adjusting the contrast and dark modes to help visibility. It would be great to turn this into a global app, as this is a global crisis and communities all around the world could benefit.
