Inspiration
The FIFA World Cup is the most anticipated football event worldwide, and with the new 48-team format in 2026, predicting outcomes has become even more exciting — and complex. Our goal was not just to predict the winner, but to showcase the power of Hex as an all-in-one platform for analytics, AI, and interactive storytelling. We were inspired to blend historical data, current FIFA rankings, and AI reasoning to make predictions that are both data-driven and explainable.
What We Learned
How to clean and merge multiple datasets in Hex, including historical World Cup results and FIFA rankings.
How to calculate performance metrics like World Cup Performance Score and normalize FIFA strength.
How to leverage Hex AI Agent to generate natural-language explanations, interactive charts, and a dynamic user experience.
The importance of storytelling in analytics — data alone isn’t enough; insights must be clear, interactive, and understandable.
How We Built It
Data Collection: We used historical match results (matches_1930_2022.csv) and FIFA rankings (fifa_rankings.csv).
AI Integration: Using Hex Agent, we generated team explanations, prediction tiers, and interactive insights.
Interactive App: Built a Hex app where users can select any team and view their predicted performance, readiness score, tier, and AI-generated reasoning.
Challenges Faced
Data Overload: The FIFA datasets had dozens of columns, many of which were unnecessary. Learning to filter only useful metrics was crucial.
Combining Historical and Current Data: Merging historical World Cup performance with modern FIFA rankings required careful normalization.
AI Integration: Getting the Hex Agent to provide clear, concise, and accurate explanations took multiple iterations.
Time Management: We had to prioritize the interactive demo for judges while still keeping the analysis robust.

Our Hex project produces a predictive, interactive, and explainable model for FIFA 2026. According to our analysis:
